Unfortunately we had an issue with the vendor who builds the handles for us overseas. They haven't been able to produce any of the new style handles yet - even though we finalized the design and bought tooling a long while ago.... very sorry for this extremely unfortunate delay - we are all waiting on these handles like you are...

Thanks for your quick response Jacques - these things happen and we know Hobie has been pro-active about solving the issue so we appreciate that. They will be a nice upgrade.

I'd be interested to know what the latest is regarding these handles as well?
With our summer over I'd love to stop the water that is scooped in by the handle without resorting to a work around fix. :?

The items wasn't able to get molded by our existing vendor who builds the current handle. We did have a few samples on our demo fleet but the project sort of died due to the molding issues that came up. We really would love to have this item incorporate into the Islands but until the handle maker can mold it without defects it's on hold.

I don't like to stick my nose into other peoples stuff, but we have all been waiting for these handles a very long time.
There are easy ways to do things and really hard ways to do things, just by looking at pics of your design you selected the latter on the handle design, especially when it comes to two shot molding.
I was chief Engineer (for over 30 yrs) at the company that invented two shot molding and held all the patents on the technology until 1985, I doubt anyone knows more about the subject.
Just a simple suggestion here, I'm not trying to burst anyone's bubble.
The TPE material you use on your handles in not the right material for a very thin and long bladder type wall, and would be very extremely difficult to mold reliably.
Here is a suggestion, If you take some .030" thick die cut polyethylene (or clear polypropylene) film (scale die cutting is very inexpensive, you can get a scale die made for $500 bucks, and the film is super cheap). And get it cut similar to this picture.

You then modify your existing mold so it has heat stake posts on the underside for the film to stake to. The film will be very durable and just folds out of the way when lifting the boat by the handles, yet still blocks any water from channeling into your face (which is very annoying).
If your currently just doing insert and overmolding on the current handles (vs true 2 shot), then it would be easy to incorporate the film staking operation prior to the overmold operation, or alternately you can insert and overmold, then heat stake the film afterwards.
Just a suggestion, I'm not trying to step on anybody's toes here.

In this case, it looked like the treatment wasn't much better than the disease. I could easily see these sleeves becoming shredded with daily use. Or getting in the way. I'll just put a piece of foam in there for now, if it bothers me.

I expect your engineers have been frying "bigger fish". Hopefully, solving the problem as part of a new hull design.

Cool that Bob offered his expertise though.

I agree that with the AI/TI it's not such an issue, especially as you are likely to get more water over the bow/aka/sides when sailing at speed.
However in kayak mode it is a real nuisance. It only takes a small wave to funnel water straight into the seat well. What used to be a dry ride now ends up wet and uncomfortable, especially now that the water temp has cooled off here. I'm using Slaughter's foam work around which works well (as long as you remember to jam the foam in BEFORE setting out) but a permanent fix would be much better.
As you say it's probably better to fix it by a redesign of the hull/handle area.
