I was sailing in 20 km wind in my 2010 AI when I heard this snapping sound, I than realized that the front right akas had broke and as it broke it flew between my legs (too close for comfort) and gave me a 6 inch cut on my left thigh . Lucky it missed the main artery because I was in the middle of the bay far from any help. I had the piece checked by a welder and he told me there wasn't enough weld on it that is why it failed. I am waiting to hear back from my dealer to see if this will be cover under warranty. I suggest that the front akas be secure with a rope to the front bar so it will stop it from injuring anybody siting in the seat. Did this ever happen to anybody else . I attached a photos of the damage. Image

Sorry I should have mentioned it ,that's just red paint on the floor of the garage.

Wow ! :shock:

You're lucky that when it broke and flew in between your legs, you suffered only a six inch gash and not the loss of something else more important !

I hope that Hobie looks into this and finds that it was just a one time anomaly.

I'm just scratchin my head trying to figure out how anything could have flown toward you in the cockpit. Can you explain?

Btw, seen some Aka failures but not at this weld.

How did it happened ,the wind was on the left side when the akas broke the boat moving forward push the front akas back and the amas up on a wave I also noticed that the rear bracket had came loose by that time my first concern was to furl the sail in to avoid a capsize.

WOW that must have been scary. Thanks for sharing. I just made sure my first aid kit was in my everyday bag.

Is that the old style AKA?

Yes it is the old style akas. From now on I will secure the akas to the front bar with a rope.

Cup ? not so much - chastity belt perhaps ...

... it seems every time I ask 2 or 3 Supermodels if they'd like a ride, once we set sail their idea of a ride seems a bit different than mine :shock:

Same thing happened to me yesterday. I was sailing my 2010 AI around Havre de Grace MD, in one to two foot choppy water, winds around 12 to 14. When I noticed the front left aka starting to come apart at the weld. I had time to furl the sail before the aka snapped completely. I was able to lower the mast and strap the broken aka to the hull and paddle back to shore. So thankful I had hobie mirage drive to get me back to shore.
