I am grateful for spook, on an Aussie kayak fishing forum (http://www.kfdu.com.u) for a clever suggestion. He bought some really cheap syphons (<$5) and then cut the one-way valves out of them. You can see one of these syphons under my TI in this photo  and here is the valve siliconed into the bottom of the seat scupper. The screw-in plug can still be fitted at the top of the scupper if required.  I haven't tested it yet, but there is no reason why it won't greatly reduce wetbum syndrome

What brand of siphons did you buy? I have been looking for similar devices here in the States but could not find any which had a proper diameter to fit into the scupper holes. |

I threw out the packaging, but the brand name is probably going to be irrelevant, as I recall it was the brand name of some local importer of the goods from China. As you might be able to spot from the photo, its inlet and outlet pipes are around 1/2 inch diameter. The valve (shown below) is not quite the right size for the scupper, being slightly too big to fit up below the threaded section, which is why I bedded it in silicone in the wider, lower section

Hey great work Tony, I have also been looking for simple solutions to the wet bum. Some of the valves I have come up with, have worked well but have been a lot too much work and hard to get components. http://www.akff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57671 It seems hard to find just the right size but cheap valve to do the job, but the ones you have used look to fit the bill prety well. |

Hi Geordie, I certainly investigated your solution first, but ran into difficulties find a cheap supply of those silicone valves you used. The dive-shop guy thought it was a great idea too, but didn't think he could obtain spare valves, and divers just tend to throw old snorkels away. Nevertheless, I have asked him to keep an eye out though, as your solution is much more robust than these little one-ways (and I could still fit yours in the scuppers as well as leaving these ones in place). |
