Totally cool Matt! That is a way serious journey! I hope the weather wasn't too nasty on the open sea part.

I spent a lot of my childhood on Churchill Island looking out over the mud flats while shooting bunnies from the cliffs. Did you run into any super shallow spots?

Luckily the cannon from the Confederate Navy ship "Shanendoah" on Churchill Island is no longer firing 4" cannonballls into Westernport Bay. Here is a photo my dad took. The pine needles jumped a foot off the ground with the shockwave!

and here it is in anger.

about 5 yrs ago i witnessed close up a weapons practise at the Gunnery at West Head Flinders..... they fired all kinds of projectiles ....up to 3 feet in length...ears plugs under the ear muffs were the only option....400,000 dollars gone in 10 minutes.....ahhh it was worth it!

Nice video of an epic trip Matt.
Where to next? Let me know if you are ever doing Phillip Is. again and if you want a buddy. Although I would have a few thousand km to drive over first.

Nice one Matt. What a trip ! I like the way you planned your footage with multiple camera shots from both land and water. Very well done.

Boy oh boy Matt, that's the sort of trip I'd love to do. Well done old son! I spent some six months very early in my career flying for Phillip Island Air Charter, so I have seen what the sea can build up to around the Island...quite terrifying, even in a professionally built 40 or 50 foot fishing boat.
You picked a fabulous day with the land breeze keeping the seas pretty flat, although some of those surf beaches while being ideal for surfers, were definitely not the place to beach for a rest...some of those waves were quite formidable...Your closing screen comment about not trying to circumnavigate PI or you will DIE would ring very true for any-one unfamiliar with the conditions to be experienced. Maybe you could organize some "day tours" for visiting AI/TI owners :D
Cheers Vintagereplica
If it works ok...modify it anyway!

Well Geordie; you could always try a circumnav of Rotto...if you can be back home before the Fremantle Doc comes in!

G'day Matt

Haven't chirped in before because I was unable to watch your video on my iPad and was away from home all last week.

Now that I have watched it I must congratulate you on both doing the trip and the excellent video, complete with commentary - and as an extra, I think I saw a mermaid on the island :D

The gang down here love cruising the Gippsland Lakes and try and get out on camping trips a few times each year. We are hoping to do our annual Sale to Lakes Entrance 100 km (approx) trip in the next few weeks.

However, we have been talking about exploring further afield and Philip island is one of the destinations we have been contemplating. So your video is a very nice teaser 8)

I think we would try and break it up into a minimum of two day camping trip.
I am told there are spectacular cliffs and caves...... :?: :o

Do you live somewhere nearby?? It would be great to have you join us on such a trip. Likewise, we would be only too pleased to show you our backyard - if you're nor already familiar with what it has to offer. (Haven't seen any mermaids here yet   )

Cheers

Great adventure and excellent video Matt.

I'm flying from Adelaide to Canberra in 2 weeks to go sailing with another TI owner. We should do a video of a circumnavigation of the island in Lake Burley Griffin? Perhaps not the same great adventure.

Noting the other comments, there seems to be an opportunity for Hobie to help organise an "Australian Island Big Week Out". With 6 months or more notice, there would probably be a few who would make the trip to Lakes Entrance or the like for a week of sailing with a local guide. Or maybe Lower Murray Lakes in South Australia one year. Anywhere but where the Fremantle Doctor blows would be good :)

Anyone else interested?

Cheers,
Brian

Thought I'd put you right Mickey since you've been away. That wasn't a Mermaid in Matt's video, they only have seals. What you saw was one of Nohuhu's SUPERMODELS on leave from the US
Cheers Vintagereplica
