I bought a few scraps of red and green ripstop spinnaker material from a local sail maker

I did some searching around this forum and the internet to determine how to repair a small hole in the clear portion of the Hobie Island sail. I'm going to try the LifeSafe Sail Repair Tape because it has the largest number of reviews, all of which are positive.

Here's what I learned about patching the clear portion of a sail for others embarking upon this:

The clear portion of the sail on and island is mylar, as best I can tell.

A handful of companies make mylar sail repair tape, which seems to be the best solution to repair a small hole.

For a temporary fix, you can use packing tape or gorilla clear tape. However, sail tape is designed to not rip in any direction and clear packing tape typically rips easily.

The sail should be cleaned with alcohol prior to patch application.

The corners of the patch should be rounded to prevent peeling.

Patches on either side of the sail should not line up exactly.

Hope this helps somebody in a similar situation

I used the LifeSafe Sail Repair Tape to patch 3 holes in my sail.

Two holes, about 1cm, were in the clear mylar window, and I noticed a 1 cm rip in the dacron when patching the window.

The tape is 6" wide and rolled on itself, no peel away backing. That made it hard to cut because it was so sticky. The tape was heavy duty and I'm sure it's going to stick for a long time. The end result was not pretty (my fault), but it probably won't be visible from afar and hopefully will extend the life of the sail.

Really, this was overkill for what I needed. I wish they sold some precut patches rather than the roll of tape. I'd pay the same price for a few patches, rather than the whole roll, just so I wouldn't have to mess around with trying to cut it to shape.

Tip: by the last patch, I realized that I could use and exacto knife to slice the tape roll length or width-wise to make a small patch up to 6" x 6"

I've been out twice since applying the sail repair tape. It is holding up great! We'll see how it holds up over a longer period of time, but I'm optimistic

I posted this in the classified as a "WTB - Want To Buy", but got no responses, so I am trying it in this thread:

I'm looking for a used Hobie Island sail for a home décor project - so it doesn't have to be usable.......would consider a Hobie Cat sail too.......

Please take a look at my post in the following thread: viewtopic.php?f=71&t=48034&start=15

There you can find info about a product to perform DIY Sail repair. Please check the following tutorial about how to repair a tear in a windsurf sail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_69rx3gqlY
