I have scratched my head on this one - they look like they would be used for some kind of tensioning but I am yet to figure out what they are there for. see what I am talking about in the 3rd picture down on this thread introducing the tramps.

 I use a bungee cord clipped to the grommets and run under a post to help keep waves from splashing up into the vaka. No one explained to me what they were really used for.

aussieonyak :
I use the grommets all the time for leashing all the junk I typically carry along. On one of them I have a 2 ft rope tied to the grommet that helps hold my soft sided cooler (where I keep my food, water, Iphone, GPS, etc. The cooler strap is looped through one of the tramps straps, but I tie the rope to one corner of the cooler so it doesn't fall over the back of the tramp. I have clips on most of my stuff so I just clip stuff to the rope or the grommets (ie... mirage drive, dive bags, sail bags, spear gun, masks, snorkels, fins, etc.
I lost a PFD one time, I wasn't wearing it, I had it just laying on the tramp and it washed off the tramp without me noticing, so I try to leash everything now.

Thanks TIDALWAVE, KB and fusioneng - I can see that they can be useful as tie down points but am still intrigued by Hobie's intention - they are placed in a specific spot for a reason - there is no mention of the grommets in the instructions which tells you what everything else is used for. I wonder if Matt Miller can enlighten us ?

On my AI, I attach the daggerboard to these grommets when it is not in its well.

However, I did lose one, because the bungee got pulled against one of the gates of the S shaped clip I was using. These are not real secure, but they are improved if the bungee, say, is clipped through BOTH clips so that it surrounds the center of the S. Then it has to pass through both clips to come undone. I don't undo it, I just unclip the clip from the grommet. This is apparently less likely to push the gate open accidentally than the bungee was.

I wish the tramps had grommets on both sides. That don't suggests, as AOY suggests, that Hobie had a specific purpose in mind in their design besides lash points....

Tidalwave, was vaka a typo, or were you really referring to the vessel as a whole?

I note from wiktionary that vaka comes from waka, which I think is a far better description of us Island addicts!
