I find myself with a spare week and am thinking of going to either Mustang Island or Galveston Island state park. I will be sailing with my wife and two little kids. We are quite competent on our well rigged TI. That said, we have never been on the ocean. I have heard that the fishing at Mustang Island is better, and that matters to us, however, it looks to me like it would be very hard to get into Corpus Christie Bay, from the Gulf side, where you camp. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where we should go? We do this a lot on lakes, and we typically sail/ fish 8-10 hours a day. Are we likely to have big trouble surf launching? We are tough, but have absolutely no salt water experience. I really would like to sail in and out of our camp every night, and not transport the TI by truck. Our only navigation is a lowrance elite-7, with 16 hours of battery capacity, and our iPhones. We have no analog nav skills, and won't be getting any this week. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

There isn't any bay access from Mustang Island state park, so you would have to drive to another area to sail the bay. I am not aware of many places that are convenient both to the bays and the gulf without a little bit of driving. As for the channels that connect bay to Gulf, Packery might be ok in a TI, but the current and traffic in the Port Aransas channel seems too dangerous to me.

Other alternatives might be Bird Island Basin at the Padre Island seashore or Goose Island state park for good bay access. You can still get some good fishing and sailing in without having to worry about surf launches and landings. If you do venture out into the Gulf, I recommend a VHF just in case of weather changes or mechanical problems. Also, do not underestimate seasickness due to the waves off the coast.

I only visit these areas a few times a year, so check out texaskayakfisherman.com or corpusfishing.com for more local info. Perhaps LivingWaters can fill you in on the Galveston/Freeport areas. Good sailing and fishing there too.

jcshreffler,

If you are in that part of the world you may be interested in LRCA Matagorda Bay Nature Park.

Address: 6420 FM Farm to Market 2031, Matagorda, TX 77457

I have never been there, but it is my understanding you launch from the inlet, only a short distance from the GOM. So you do not have to put up with a surf launch. However, you still need to exercise caution when leaving or returning any inlet incase wind and current are in opposition and steep waves may result.
