We push things fairly hard here on the TI, but try not to operate very long at torture-test levels, like the ones I've seen on some videos (you bad-asses know who you are!).

Like RH, I see Amazing mast deflection compared to any other sailboat. It unnerves you at times, and you sit on edge waiting to hear a CLUNK, RIP, or SNAP! But it always seems to endure, spill air and recover.

So manufacturing defects, a change in spec, or even improper boat setup could be the culprit. It seems less likely on a new mast that a furling drum has broken loose.

It would be interesting to see picts of the damage to these new masts. Anyone have them?

Without the carcass, all we can do is speculate.

I doubt it's a common ocurrance. How many broken masts are we actually talking about? A dozen out of 5,000? A dozen out of 1,000?

I hate it when panic seems to set in... as Tom is suggesting, the massive majority of TI masts do NOT break. There appears to be a very small batch of 2013 TIs which have suffered a mast failure in the area just above the furling drum. As far as I can tell, there have been just three such instances reported here.

I would love to know the number of TIs sold, as well as the number of 2013 TIs sold, which will highlight this to be simply a tiny batch of flawed masts, and would be prepared to bet that Hobie will be immediately on top of this isolated issue, just as they are with any other one.

Just wanted to say that we heard from our dealer and Hobie is going to replace the mast under warranty.
