Till the rudder mount broke.  Took a while but I was able to sail and steer with a paddle. Sometimes reefing the sail a half turn would make steering easier. Molded in bolt shears off even with the back of the boat. I was is sloppy seas (going every which way) when the rudder mount broke.

Nasty...good thing the tide was coming in! The current right there at yellow bluff can really rip. Your track going back to Sausalito looks great once you got it Sussex out! Did you just cart the boat over to the new wind toys shop and have a chat? |

The gudgeon and stern don't match. One is flat, one is rounded. So the bolts take the brunt of the load. I need to go back and find the earlier photo sequence I put on this site about how to fix the problem, permanently. Takes about 20 minutes and a little sandpaper. That's all. |

Easiest way to fix is to fill the back of gudgeon with silicone when you put it back on. When you tighten it back down the excess silicone oozes out, you wipe away the excess and let it dry. Once dry it has formed a conforming gasket that prevents the rocking ( the cause of the fatigue on the metal screw). That's all it takes, nothing complicated and only takes a minute to do and a few cents worth of silicone, and of course two new bolts ( available at lowes), make sure you replace the other bolt also, as it is probably also fatigued. You have so much surface area with the silicone gasket, it won't rock, plus it's easy to remove vs 3M 5200 or something more harsh and messy. Hope this helps Bob |

Tom trimmed his gudgeon to better conform with the hull. We have used Bobs Goop method. Both are great ideas. |

I reformed mine with a file and sanding when I found it loose after breaking 3 pins. No problem since... |
