Post subject:  What accessories did you get immediately with your Island?

Hi, Trying to get the initial list together for a TI purchase. Would love to know what anyone got immediately that didn't come with the boat & trailer as packaged? And if you went with the trailex with the 3rd crossbar and it was great, or really not needed? Rudder, fin options? And a cover question: Will a boat tarp wrapped around the boat on the trailer do just fine, or is the made-for-it cover worth the money?

Trying to maintain calm. Obviously not working at my desk...

I bought trampolines and the boat cover. Didn't end up using the tramps. The cover is nice, but wait until you try to get it back in the attached storage bag. No way, no how. I unstitched it and bought a military duffle bag to stuff it in. Nice cover, however.

No third crossbar on the trailer, but I did rig rollers fore and aft for more support and easily loading/unloading. Just make sure if you put rollers under it that support the hull, you make darn sure you tie the boat front and rear. You don't want to lose it off the back of the trailer, or have it fly into your vehicle on the road. This is why most don't recommend using rollers as support points. Makes movement too easy. So if you do, tie the boat so it can't move.

Definitely tramps - I love them and am out on them all the time. I bought bags - I love bags! - We have this one that I put both drives in when we're not using them and I secure the bag on the tramp so it doesn't head overboard. It's kindof a tight fit, but it works.

And these below are my definite favorite. They're kayak deck bags and I secure them to the bungees near the front edge of each tramp. I put empty soda cans, trash, shoes, suntan lotion...anything that I need to secure inside of there - even the plugs when we have the drives in. They've held up through dozens of trips in salt and freshwater... just rinse them off with your other gear... still going strong.

Enjoy!!!

Definitely get the spray skirts. The ride can get quite wet especially for the front seat. I bought the tramps and didn't like them because they are too trampoline like with an adult on them. Your butt hangs down in the water and they are hard to move around on. It is invaluable to be able to hike out when sailing to balance the kayak.

I built what I call hard haka platforms out of 1x12s and 2x2s cost is 30.00 each and much more useful than the tramps.

I really like the trailex trailer. We didn't get the extra cross bar with ours. I might upgrade the wheel size though.

Leashes. Whatever unattached toys you buy, get a leash for each one.

You might be able to pick up something here:

There was another video from a guy in Australia that had really added some neat stuff to his boat, including a built in manual bilge pump that could be operated from one of the drink holder wells. If I can find the link I'll pass it along.

Tramps, leashes for the drives, extra handles for the bow and stern, a couple of extra rudder pins, and an extra junky cheap line for rescuing you or other boats. There was an older post, which maybe someone else can find, with a good safety equipment list, like a waterproof first aid kit, whistles for each person, small pliers, etc.

I also keep everything in used plastic containers like the ones that nuts, cheese, or pickles come in at Sam's Club. The big square jar things are great for keep things saltwater free and dry when you get water in the hull, like these:

KonaTI2, I called Trailex about 12" tires, and they told me that 12" wheels would create a hopping problem from too much mass spinning around the axle on the SUT-2xx. I can't tell which trailer you have, but you may want to give them a call before spending the money.

Say what they want, but larger tires will reduce "hopping."

i had a pre-order in for my first TI a year before they came out so with that TI i just had the tramps and a normal small wheeled cart. i later bought leashes, anchor (make sure its the right one for the area you want to anchor in sand, rocks, etc), emergency water bladder (never used it but it is there), spray skirts, extra rudder pins.

i only had the 1st TI for a summer. when i bought my second a year later i got the bigger beach cart and another set of tramps since i still had everything else.

Can two mirage drives fit in the Hobie drive bag? Wondering if 2 are necessary, or if I can just put both in a duffle with some padding.

Unless you put something heavy on them, they should be fine with or without the bag. They are an odd shape and size, being wide at one end and high at the other (90 degrees from each other) so they can't ever just lie flat.

I had a trailer that I converted once I got my TI. I would not try to car top a TI. I did get tramps as my first accessory. In the forward seat I like to use the tramp as my collection bin.

I have never bothered with a cover for my TI. It lives in my garage, while the car stays out.
