Post subject:  How to check conditions for sailing

I sail in socal and I'm wondering what others use to check the conditions before going out/ planning ahead.

I've just been looking at weather for the beach I'll be launching from as far as temp and wind. Is there other aspects of the weather I should be looking for like current direction/ strength etc? Are there also reports on what the wind will be like offshore?

Thanks!

I'm pretty new to all this, but I've really enjoyed using the data from http://www.sailflow.com. You may have to pay to get the more in-depth current information and advanced forecasts, but the free options have been very helpful for me.

Of course, depends on where in So Cal, but generally... weather is predictable and consistent. Rarely do we get a sudden storm or unexpected change in weather. Our weather typically tracks down the coast from the North West which gives daily forecasters plenty of warning of approaching weather changes.

You can use Surfline.com They have coastal surf, and coastal wind predictions.

Has some yacht Club weather stations. They should give marine info.

Usually this far south, changes in marine weather are 60 miles out, so coastal weather is consistent fairly far out.

C-boarder--you have not indicated your location (in your Profile), so no body can give you any specific information. Here in S FL, in the winter (Nov-Mar) you have fronts coming in regularly, but your morning local weather report tracks that and helps you make your decision. In the summer time in coastal waters, you have to worry about localized thunder storms cropping up. Again, you can look at your local weather report. Personally, I use Weather.com and their "Hourly" for a specific area to determine if I'm going out for a day sail.

I use Sailflow and Windfinder for current conditions and wind forecasts. It is awesome to see forecasts for wind before I head to the lake, so much better than the old days.
