I am planning a 6 week road trip to W.A. with the TI in August/September this year. Haven't yet decided whether to car top with camper trailer or trailer the boat and tent it. In any case, the main destination is the coast above Perth to Shark Bay. I may also have time to spend a week or so between Walpole and Albany on the way back. Anyone out there who has travelled these parts who might have some tips on sailing and camping spots?

Just a heads-up for those not in Austraslia. That little trip frpm Adelsaide to Shark Bay is a cool 3448 kilometres, or 2142 miles, and includes the longest straight stretch of road in the country, which goes for 91 miles. There are lots of accidents at the bend!

Thanks for the tip, and I will contact W.A. Brian as suggested.
Your setup looks brilliant. Could I borrow it for a few months?
One of the things I need to establish, as will you, is whether a 4wd is required to reach essential spots. W.A. Brian's local knowledge should help here.
I think the car-top and caravan or camper trailer is a great combination, because it allows you to set up a base and then do day trips to local waterways. And the boat is carried by the machine with the most sophisticated suspension, and therefore relatively protected if you do have to traverse some rough roads.
I have done a reasonable amount of car topping, and even though I have had a significant back injury in the past, I think I can engineer a simple process to make loading on and off safe and easy. I will study your photos and see what I come up with. What is your loading technique?

Hi Alastair.

I missed the Adelaide bit before. I will send you a personal message (see
the top left alongside your Logout and name) as you are welcome to have
a look at the set up and come out sailing one day.

I have built a frame which the TI sits on and that in turn sits on roof racks.
I don't trust the roof racks on the Commodore so I also support and hold
down the frame and the TI at front and back.
The rear support comes off to open the tail gate and has
a roller at the end.

I have a frame on the TI which goes on the rudder
mount which keeps the TI vertical and stops it moving when unloading.
So I simply lift the front only, onto the roller and move the TI forward.
Eventually I will get a winch, when it becomes to hard to lift.

When I get home, I drive into the garage and attach an electic winch
through the drive hole and winch it into the ceiling.

And one day, I will do a movie of the setup I keep promising myself.
