He gently walked me through the hype on the mirage system... no difference.. has to do with patent stuff that needs to be dealt with.. in a blind test, I picked the older mirage pedals as easier. so the 10%? Hype? He also pointed out, the roller bearings are just more mechanism to get clogged with sand?
The seats? He was not a big fan of them... they are all plastic and very flimsy.. they won't hold anyone heavy.. they will break easily and I wasn't impressed... He won't warrantee them because he KNOWS they will be problematic... Very flimsy... I will take the other seat that WILL NOT FAIL over the new one any day... Yes, they might be dryer, but it's a wet boat... get over it...
the new hull entry? yea, looks more like the Racing boats with additional waterline, but he pointed out something I had not thought about... lake sailing with sea weed? it will pick that stuff up, rather than sailing over it... Good point! Will it really enhance the boat speed? if it does, I can't imagine significantly...
Looks to me like someone has been given a bum steer in an effort to clear old stock to make room for the new. If that dealer said he won't honor a warranty on an official Hobie product, he has no business being a Hobie dealer, period.
As for the new seat being drier not being a big deal, well, you're soon going to find out its not just about being drier. I see comfort and adjustability as being the bigger issue. And reports I have heard from people who have tried the new drive (at the Hobie fishing worlds) and have used the old one for years and thus have a real base for comparison, the newer ones are noticeably more efficient. Hobie have not done this for a patent issue - they've done it for performance improvement. Bank on it. However it is possible that there might be a little more maintenance involved, but that is no problem for me. I don't neglect my gear.
And 'lake sailing with sea weed?' Oh my god, this guy was willing to say just about anything to take your money. And you fell for it! Haha
