Hiking Out/Sailing From The Tramp?

It shows a line/pulley system that allows one to steer an AI while sitting on the tramp.

The guy in the vid is getting away with it but, at 210#, I probably have sixty or seventy pounds on him.

The Question: Would my doing this constitute cruel and unusual treatment for the AI's iakos and/or mast?

I hiked out the other day and I weigh 235+. As long as your not putting al your weight on a buckle you should be fine.

Yeah, I really want to try Hajime's steering system. I had a list of parts I wrote down somewhere, need to find it again and order.

I think the akas will be fine, it's the tramps themselves that will fail with excess weight. They list a 200 lb limit for the tramps, but there's a Hobie intro video where the guy said he weighs 250 and stands on them while fishing.

I built hakas for mine, they hold my 300 lbs just fine when hiking out. It's quite a different experience from just sitting in the seat. So far I'm just using the Hobie hiking stick screwed into the steering handle.

That leaves the mast.

Seems like any weight added to the windward tramp adds stress to the mast in that now the mast has to cope with both the floatation of the leeward ama and whatever is riding on the tramp.

I'm probably overthinking this.....-)

The mast is meant to flex...a lot. If your sail is trimmed for the wind your not going to have any issues. Even if you have too much sail out you'll bury the leeward ama even hiking out.

Most of my sailing is done hiking out. I only sit in the seat if the wind isn't strong enough and I have to pedal.
Hiking out is OK on tramps but much better on haka.
A hiking stick works well enough and is a lot simpler than a rope system.
