I am trying to build a reasonable pre-launch checklist without going all OCD over it (unless I am already....)

Here is what I have so far, seeking additions/corrections/more logical sequence:

  • PFD present
    .
  • Paddle present
    .
  • Cell phone charged/present
    .
  • VHF radio charged/present
    .
  • Fore hatch closed
    .
  • Aft hatch closed
    .
  • Mirage Drive leash attached to boat.
    .
  • Vaka drain plug closed
    .
  • Port ama drain plug closed
    .
  • Starboard ama drain plug closed
    .
  • Yank *Hard* on aft port ama to ensure clips engaged
    .
  • Yank *Hard* on fore port ama to ensure clips engaged
    .
  • Yank *Hard* on aft starboard ama to ensure clips engaged
    .
  • Yank *Hard* on fore starboard ama to ensure clips engaged

Not sure where you sail, but, at a minimum, I would add:

spare aka brace bolts with zip ties
spare rudder pins
hand pump
spare line
anchor

multitool?
marlinspike?

I also file a "float plan" letting someone on shore know my planned itinerary and estimated time of return.

I use an iOS app called Checklist. Here's an export without the nice formatting:

Communications
Float Plan
VHF
Phone
Beacon
Navigation
Chartplotter
Battery Charged
SD Card Loaded
Handheld GPS
Batteries
SD Card Loaded
Chart
Safety
PFD
Knife
Whistle
Marlin Spike
Multitool
Ditch Bag
Rudder Pins
Aka Bolts
Zip Ties
Light
Spectra
Health
First Aid Kit
Food
Water
Sunscreen
Lip Balm
Boat
Hatches Sealed/Drain Plugs Closed
Anchors
Bilge Pump
Sail
Peddles
Paddles
Trampolines
Clothing
Dry suit
Hat
Gloves
Glasses
Go Pro Camera
Batteries
Mounts
Blank SD Card

That's not a bad idea. As I get older I find myself forgetting things on a regular basis.

Last trip out, for example, I'd ran through my boat checklist (mirage drive, paddle, dagger-board, etc)
and was happy I had everything I needed.

However, about 20 minutes later (when I was on the water and about 600m into a 9km trip) I reached
for my VHf only to realise it wasn't there. Not only that, my PFD (which the radio is leashed to) was
also missing! Luckily it was only a relatively minor inconvenience to head back to shore, run back to
the house and collect the missing gear.

Sounds silly, I know. But I was so engrossed in making sure that I had all the boat gear sorted, I'd
completely forgotten about checking the stuff that would be attached to me... I dread to think
what I'll be like when I'm 70 years old (only 48 atm)...

Anyway, this leads me to suggest splitting the check-list into two sub-sections: Boat Stuff & Body Stuff.

Boats Stuff is all the usual hardware that's carried on, or part of, the boat.

Body Stuff could include the gear that you wear or have attached to your person.

Would've certainly help me the other day!

I'm thinking of getting together a list (the suggestions so far in the thread are great), which I'll
them print and laminate and have attached to the boat in some way (inside the hatch or on the
back of the seat, I'm not sure).

Great post guys...

Cheers,

Mike.

I tend to leave as much as possible* on board (luckily I have a lockup garage for my TI) so only need the following for day trips:

Fresh water (I always also have 3 litres in the hull for emergencies which I refresh every few weeks)
Phone (with Navionics app) and charged battery
Charged 7amp 12V battery for Lowrance chartplotter
PFD with line cutterr
PLB (stowed in the hull for inshore, attached to the pfd for offshore)
10 metre anchor line attached to front crossbar
SPF 50+ sunscreen

Permanently on board are two dry bags leashed to a crossbar
Ground tackle- 6 feet of chain, blue Cooper anchor, extra 25m anchor line, shackles,
Safety bag -hand-bearing compass, masthead light, multi tool, hand flares, sea marker dye, first aid kit, rudder pins, brace pins, waterproof charts, space blanket

For offshore I add:
VHF with charged batteries (attached to the pfd)
extra 50m anchor line (goes in ground tackle dry bag)
more water
food
