This is totally-idle speculation.... but the question is there:

If somebody had a 2015 AI and they came across a 2014 main hull, could it be what bikers call "a bolt-over" proposition ?

i.e. would the 2015 mast, vakas, and rudder fit ?

Mast maybe, but there is a difference in distance between the akas, which means the 2015 amas would not fit. Part of the lure of the 2015's is that they have larger amas and a larger bow. The larger amas help counteract the larger sail and the added volume in the bow alleviated the submarining.

The real Question is, why would you want to downgrade to a 2014 hull. The hull of the 2015 AI is most of the reason the 2015 AI rides so well in rough water

I probably would not.

But, since realizing how much faster and lighter the 2015 Revo that I tried before buying the AI was, I have been kind of obsessed with the idea that, while fishermen would probably consider it a downgrade, a lot of people would be better served by a less massive hull that had a better k-factor and 20# less weight.

One way to test that would be a 2014 hull - maybe with a bow plane if pearl-diving became an issue.

Understood that the the 2015 AI does not want to pearl-dive like the 2014.... but my surfski doesn't want to pearl dive either and it is about 18" wide with a k factor to match ...and when it does pearl-dive on a wave, it comes right back up like the Hobie 17 does.

But that's all irrelevant to reality right now.... and I am coming to deal with my AI for what it is and not what I wish it were.... First few times on the water, I gave it a Fun Factor of 2-3.... now I've promoted it to 5-6 and the end is probably not in sight...

Mainly it was idle curiosity.

But, geeze!.... that thing is heavy..... -)

No. The masts are not interchangeable due to the difference in hull depth. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding someone to swap your heavy 2015 for a lighter 2014

Yes, the AI 2 is a much better sailing boat than the AI. The hull is much larger. The cost--weight. It is what it is.

I'm going with that.

Case Closed.....

Thanks.

G'day Gents,

I recently sailed with others that had earlier AI's than my 2015 AI, and we took one of my AMAs and placed it onto the earlier AI and it fitted easily.

"PROBLEM" when we stood directly in front of the Boat, you could see that the front of the AMA was toeing OUT.

So to answer the original Questions, Yes some of the equipment is interchangeable, HOWEVER, it does not work.

Safe sailing,

Peter.

What would be interesting to me would be swapping your 2015 mast/sail with an earlier AI and then seeing how well/poorly each one sailed with the swap.

The akas themselves would likely fit, as they don't really care how close they are to one another - the shoulder socket on the aka cross bar is the same as before. Think about it - the distance on the 2014 AI and TI are different, but they use the same akas.

The only trouble might arise when you attempt to fold the akas, as the spacing on the new amas would be closer than they are on the old ones, so you don't have equal spacing between the aka cross bars on the hull, versus the insertion holes on the amas.
