Hi all, I'm looking to make some 'interim' tramps until I can afford to buy new ones...

Can anyone give me a 'rough' width please so that I can source some stainless tube to reinforce the front and back edges please. I'm away from home so not able to measure AKA's... Thanks...

PS. 2015 TI

First tramp I made was 28" wide.... so 36" CYA.

I found that fiberglass rod worked well for the back edge reinforcement...... And it seems friendlier than SS tubing (both hand-friendly on the ends, and tool-friendly when cutting....)..... Plus there's no chance of collapsing/crimping.

Here's my second tramp - which is wide enough to facilitate a deep-water remount via the ama, but narrow enough to allow paddling...... Also 28" wide.....https://picasaweb.google.com/1081497986 ... 6019012050

The yellow fiberglass rod is cut from one of those rods used for marking things you don't want the snow plows to hit. About 7mm diameter. ..... Not to be confused in the pic with the yellow Spectra line holding the two sections together .... but that's another story...

Thanks Pete, I've gone ahead and made mine (although not completely finished yet...) but it's below freezing here in Scotland just now and we've had a run of bad weather for sailing (even for us) so haven't had a chance to try them out yet. I've just 'acquired' some wood for making haka's out of so will post pics when complete.... thanks for the reply though, I like the idea of the open mesh to allow you to hike out and not catch the wind underneath - wind is something we have 'plenty' of here

I had it out in 25+ gusts last weekend and did not notice any increased tendency to heel/flip/pitchpole on the tack with tramp windward. Some tendency had to be there.... but I was not noticing it.

Season's over here too. We had 60-ish F temps right up to the 1st week in January, but the hammer fell a few days ago and that's probably going to be "it" for the next six weeks.

Dunno when salt water freezes, but the bay where I sail was frozen over out to about 100' from shore this morning: http://extremesurfcam.dyndns.org/

How do you get it up on top of your (Land Rover?) ?

Side loader? T-bar?

I've only got a pic with my old outback on it - but basically it's a bike carrier with a tube welded on the bottom which connects to a couple of gate hinges on my towbar. Not pretty but does the job. Also, I have two lengths of PVC pipe on the roof rack acting as bunks. Guess you could say it's a take on the T bar loader. I can get it on & off solo, but only after removing AKA/AMA's.
