V Brace Stud Replacement Recommendation. Newer Islands have a 5/16" bolt at the base of the V Brace inside the hull. Pre-2016 models had a 1/4-20 stud. Boats of the older vintage, that see heavy use and especially the Tandem Island, have seen some failures. We are recommending the replacement of the smaller studs, every so often, depending on the type of use. Matt Nice video and good to know about replacing the stud. But of course some comments. Using vice grips might work but is a bit of a risk, one could end up with buggered threads and not being able to remove the stud anyway. Then the nut can't be put back on. The better way is 2 nuts on the thread locked against each other. Then the stud and nuts can come out as one. Some paint or nail polish on the nut and base of the V Brace will quickly show if the nut or stud is backing out. Makes for a quick check, and if one is heavy handed like me and likes to pull it down every time it is inspected it can avoid over tightening. |

Jim only used vice grips to remove the old stud. Expecting to replace it. Great idea on the nail polish to check for loosening! |

Is this stud what is called the set screw "88991215 SET SCREW" in the part list? If not, what is the length of the stud? Is it a Hobie part? Or can we replace it with any 1/4-20 stainless stud from a hardware store or Hobie dealer? |

It is a high grade stainless, so I would get the Hobie part. 88991215 SET SCREW, TI MAST V BRACE 1/4-20 THRD RLD, 17-4 SS Newer boats: 88991216 SCREW 5/16-18 X 1.25 STUD SLOTTED |

Thanks Matt, Anything else you think should be replaced on a 2012 Tandem Island as a precaution? I have already placed a warranty order for the two items you menitoned in 2018,
79512101 ISLAND FURLER LINE GUIDE KIT on order. I replaced the steering and up/down lines this year. Wondering if there are any standard items that should be replaced every few years. Thanks, Texas |

Rudder pin. I would do that regularly or at the minimum inspect it. |

If I understand this post correctly, my original 2015 TI v-Frame stud needs to be replaced with a stronger stud (88991215 SET SCREW, TI MAST V BRACE 1/4-20 THRD RLD, 17-4 SS). Is this part actually stronger than my original or is it simply routine maintenance to replace it? I recently noticed the lock-nuts on my V-Frame turnbuckles are not locked meaning the turnbuckle adjustments which have undoubtedly moved need to be checked, corrected & locked. What is the proper procedure for doing this? I haven't been able to find literature on this subject. Thanks |

Thanks for the clarification. That had been my suspicion right along. The method I used (not really knowing if it was correct, so again thank you) was to loosen the stud nut enough to allow vertical movement of the bottom plate, then to use the turnbuckles to first center the bottom plate on the stud, then evenly extend the turnbuckles evenly to set the bottom plate on its mount plus 1/4 turn, then lock the turnbuckles in place and re-torque the stud nut. Just a mention for the suggestion box: Instead of a slot on the head of the stud, an allen key would save a lot of aggravation for "every so often" routine maintenance especially in areas blue Locktite products are recommended. |

Sounds like Jim got inspired after breaking the stud on his AI on the EC! I've seen several of these break, luckily none myself. I replaced mine this spring and bought about three extras with the idea of replacing them on a regular basis, especially before a big and hard outing like another EC. |

I sheared that stud off on a 2012 TI last year. After failing my attempt to extract the broken stud myself, I took it to a local machine shop that had the job done quickly for $20. I tried drilling into the broken stud to use an extractor, and ended up breaking a lot of bits even though tried to drill slow with a lot of cutting oil. Then I tried cutting a slot into the top of the broken stud which had promise, but the earlier attempts to drill it out foiled that plan. I think the machine shop used a left-handed drill bit, which turned the stud out quickly. |

I just took delivery of a new 2012 Island Adventure. Yes, not a typo, a brand new 2012 IS with 2 year warranty. It was sitting in the shop for 8 years ! This is an interesting post because of the various recalls that this IS has missed. Is there a summary of recalls / warranty options I should get ? Should I get this from Hobie directly or go through a Hobie dealer ? Thanks in advance. |

I searched for 88991216 on the Hobie site and didn't see it. The 88991215 is listed there, but do I understand that to be the small stud that needs to be replaced or the new one we should now be using?
