Just want to say hi. I'm an old time cat sailor/racer who needed a new boat. A good buddy, and new AI owner himself, invited my family and me to try out his new trimaran in the Oakland estuary. He knew we were looking to buy a new boat but I just couldn't make up my mind (I was leaning toward a Hobie FX One). I loved everything about his little Island except that dang rudder. I'm no stranger to customizing and modifying. So when I decided to pull the trigger and buy two (for my wife and me) I had decided to just fix that problem myself. Thank you Hobie for beating me to the punch! My boats came with all the upgrades installed. What a tremendous difference the new rudder makes. We have had the boats less than a week and we've had them out on the river three days now. We'll be out there again this afternoon. The winds here in Rio Vista can get pretty heavy. The first two days we sailed in stuff that would have beached any cat I might have considered. Wow, what fun. With the new rudder I can have the whole sail out in heavy air and still bear off. So hard in fact that on a flip-it-or-break-it run I buried the lee ama a foot under water. Ya baby! And it all stayed together. I have started modifying my boat, Little Red (remember, I'm no stranger). I have added an outhaul line to the main sheet to get better off-wind sail shape. I have about 25 lbs. on my wife, and in light to moderate wind with all else being equal I can pull the outhaul out and pull away from her. Just guessing I'd say a 20%-25% improvement down wind until it starts blowing harder. It also helps you avoid accidental jibes when driving deep and getting lifted. It's not a perfect system yet though. I have some bugs to work out and then I'll post some pics. I'm so glad this forum is here. I've read almost all your posts. Thanks for all your contributions. Hi All - great forum and vert helpful. After alot of research I finally picked up my AI on Friday and took it out a few times this weekend. Living in Canada and sailing on lake Simcoe we do get some good winds but its not the ocean. Thanks to this forum when I picked up my AI, I knew more about it and the updates then the dealer, he was surprised about everything I knew. For example the Aka carrying bag was missing and I advised the dealer as this was posted on the forum, and the dealer has ordered me one. I was also able to inspect my AI to make sure all the updates were on it. Since this was an early 2007 manufactured date everything looks ok. The only thing broken was the clip on the drybag and I hope the dealer will replace it. I do have one question if anyone can help. Does the speed tube for the mirage pedal drive come with it, I have seen it in pictures but mine did not come with one. I have not done any mods yet but always interested in what people here come up with. Thank Hobie for a great product. Any other Canadian owners around ??? |

I also knew more about it than my dealer (or at least the employee that helped me). He didn't realize that the daggerboard swivled back incas you touched ground. |

They used to be included with the boats, but are now available as a separate accessory. Maybe you could talk your dealer into throwing one in, if for nothing else, for the all the educational information you've given him!

Thanks Roadrunner I will give it a try. I don't recall seeing it in the accessories catalogue I wil have to look again. |
