I was wondering - For safety reasons - In case one of the lines attached to the rudder get loose - and the rudder does not operate - what would you do ? use the paddle as a "rudder"? any ideas what to do in such unfortunate event ??

The paddle can be used in a pinch.

First.

Get it up and locked down. Even if you have to go into the water to do so.

As Cheika states you can then use your paddle- to steer while pedaling/sailing.

Or if your paddling, different types of paddling strokes to steer the yak..

I snapped a rudder pin once in 20 knot winds and was able to sail the yak back 2 miles, using the paddle as a rudder. So it will work. I actually keep my paddle broken down in the front hatch and just grabbed half the paddle and used that. Reefed the sail and sailed home.
