Can anyone recommend an insurance company with good coverage and reasonable rates?

GEICO has insured my horse trailer. I would include them in your rate check

I have 2 Hobie kayaks and a Rack and Roll trailer. The trailer is covered under my car insurance policy & I added collision for 12.90 per 6 months. The kayaks are covered under my homeowners for liability & @20 each for the kayaks themselves per year. That is with AAA insurance.

So check with your insurance agent.

Thanks BNR.
Re: Kayaks What kind of coverage does your homeowners provide? Does it cover theft/damage only while at your property, or does/can it cover theft, damage, loss of the boat and gear while out boating, or on a trip? No one wants to insure a polyethelene plastic boat. They also ask if its a sailboat or a pleasure boat--and I say both--nobody wants to consider it after that.

Buying insurance for an AI?

Doesn't that go against the whole "simplicity philosophy" of the boats themselves?

Polecat,

The liability part covers any damage or injury you might do to someone else. That is under the homeowners. The $20 a year covers the kayak itself for fire & theft anywhere it might be. Only the kayak is covered. All other items would be covered under your home owners if covered at all. Ask you agent to clarify your policy. I had no problem insuring them with AAA as I have two cars & home with them. My agent didn't ask about the sailing part. But they are a kayak first. I wouldn't tell them about the sail option.

The above is what I have so please check to see what your insurance covers. I don't want to get a bill from you because your insurance didn't cover a loss. -) (':D') ( or what ever the smile thingy is.)

:) Thanks BNR for your response.

It was what I expected--and how State Farm should have handled it when I first called--before placing this post. Needless to say I'm not happy with the run-around I got from State Farm. They have one last chance to get their act together before I move on to another company.

Polecat,

How did you end with the insurance battle?

Once I sat down face to face with State Farm I got the anwsers I wanted.

Boat Damage/Loss: Covered under Homeowners wherever loss occurs--keep pictures & receipts to backup any claim.

Liability: Personal Injury/Property Damage is covered under current auto and umbrella policies.

Collision:. Covers loss/damage to RackandRoll Trailer.

After the run-around I got from State Farm over the phone, I took your email with me when I went in to see them today. They said it shouldn't have been a problem to take care of this over the phone--all I needed added was the Collision to cover the trailer.

All's well that ends well. Again, thanks for your help.

Glad it all worked out well for you polecat.

My question is why do people have to give someone such a hard time just to take their money? Customer service has gone down the drain.

I have wondered how do people without the tools to find help, like on this board, get the info they need to get ahead. I'm talking about the ones who don't have extra money and others trying to take advantage of them.

Guess we can't save everyone but I we keep trying.

Howdy!

I got theft insurance from State Farm for 2 Hobies and the Hobie trailer for about $200 a year. This doesn't include liability.

Happy Trails!

If you have auto and home insurance with them your liability should be covered that way. If not, then the Hobies will be on their own.

Howdy, Namaste & Aloha to all AI afficionadoes!

I do have both home & auto insurance from State Farm, but was told they'd only cover up to $1000 for each boat, with no liability. The agent and I laughed together at the thought of giving kayaks liability insurance. It seems a bit overkill. I bit the mango and paid for more theft insurance to sleep better; even unfolded on a trailer the boats stand out and get a LOT of attention.

BTW, the Hobie trailer has a humongous Yakima box bolted to the top of the "T" brace. When covered with a tarp, it ends up looking a lot like an old car is underneath. Perhaps this is anti-theft camoflague? Of course, I also use a ball hitch and latch lock (which would probably slow a thief down 25 seconds).

I'm lucky to live in a low crime area, where crack heads won't steal your 1956 black & white TV and rabbit ears with tin foil to get money for their next fix.

Sailing on a mountain lake today,

Chris

I use a kayak lasso lock for the AI and in addition a couple of cables that also run thru the Mirage Drive well to another lock. Iuse a hitch and receiver lock as well. Should slow it down a bit. .Most thieves are dumb.

That said I would also engrave/mark your boat's Hull Identification Number (HIN) on your sails, amas, and in one other location on the interior of your hull. Mark all your other gear including all drives with the HIN.

I titled and registered my AI in New Mexico. A title and your photos of the boat including the HIN will speed things up in a claim. If you are registereing for the first time I found it helpful if your dealer would separate the cost of your trailer and it's sales tax from your vessel.
