The typical AI/TI sailor/pedaler has only a vague idea about sea kayaks and muscles used. The strong sea kayaker uses mainly their torso/stomach muscles along with the bracing muscles of their legs. Currently, Mosquitomagnet in the Ultimate Florida Challenge has done about 800 mi of the 1200 mi race. He is averaging 40-45 mi/day. He is only behind a trimaran 2-person team which has averaged about 10-13 mi/hr up the east coast of FL. He is a day behind them. Here is a picture of MM at Flamingo in last year's Everglades Challenge.

I don't know the physics and physiology of comparing leg muscles and the pedalling motion vs the torso muscles and paddling motion. So, I cannot compare them, but it would be an interesting race to see an Adventure do the 300-mi Everglades Challenge.

Hi Keith!

Sorry if I was unclear, but I newer meant to compare muscle groups in that aspect that some consume more energy than others.

I meant that if a hull is more heavy to propulse, it has more drag, it doesn't glide good, then for a given speed and distance that will consume more energy than a sleek hull with less drag and good glide trough water. Regardless of what muscle groups that are used. By most people the leg muscles can do that work better and the Mirage Drive let them do that. Still, the Adventure hull will drain the energy out of your body faster.

But I think the same as you, it would be very interesting if Adventure kayak-mode will compete with a very fit pedaler. He (or she) must have lots of quality food and probably be eating constantly.

Yes I would say that paddling is very effective for leg muscles. The paddling motion helps to bring changes in the leg muscles.

I don't believe anyone has yet accepted the challenge to do the Everglades Challenge in a Hobie Adventure--pedal/paddle power only. It would be a real first! BTW, pedal/paddle power would put you Class 1--you can use a 1 meter sail for each person in the boat--2 sails, if 2 peddlers.

This year the EC is scheduled for Mar 7-14, 2015. At the time of this posting, there are 19 TIs and 3 AIs registered. Registration and entry fee payment must be completed by Jan 31.
