This years Watertribe North Carolina Challenge starts on Friday 07:30 Eastern Time. You can follow the race on the Watertribe Mapper:

Couple weeks ago I did part of the course with a Triac through the Harlowe Canal portion. This weekend's weather is suppose to be much milder. The lack of wind will be the bigger problem.

There will be six AI/TI competing. Boat Roster:

What will you be competing in this year - the Hobie or the Triak?

Never mind, I read it again and figured it out.

Good luck. This thing intrigues me. I'll be watching the progress as it happens.

Good luck! Favorable winds and tight lines!

Please keep us posted. I sail my TI off of Ocracoke from time to time, so I am interested in trying the NC Watertribe maybe next year or the year after. I might try circumnavigating Ocracoke first!

What wind??? The outlook is not good. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love Gale Force conditions. Instead I will spend all day Friday roasting in the sun.

Oriental has a camera that looks toward Cedar Island, on the Neusse River.

It takes a shot every 10 minutes. You can see the slide show for the last hour. We should be passing the far side of the river berween 1300-1500. Some of the bigger sails should show up on the horizon.

Thanks for the link. I have a question that may be a silly one. Where do you sleep when you do this race?

Good luck and fair winds, shame we don't have anything like this in aus.

Well, 6 hours into the NCC the Hobie Islands are completely dominating class 5. Dogs Life is 2nd following a TI. Behind him is another AI and then 2 more TI's.

It looks like there's very little wind so the mirage drives are probably giving them a good workout. Anyone wanting to follow along on the tracker

jerinaldi,

The answer as to where do the contestants sleep seems to be - anywhere possible.

Those who are hellbent on winning may not sleep at all. They push straight through to the finish. Others will find a beach and put in for a few hours sleep and a meal and then push off again.

I get the feeling that for many it's not really about winning, it's about the challenge of finishing. Which in many ways is every bit as good as winning.

Finally had the chance to finish my NCC Video:

No part 2. Second part of the trip was at night. Finished in less than 24 hours.

Again Class 5 top 2 winners were Hobie TI & AI. Do not ever want to pedal 100 miles again...

Nice video Paul. I noticed 2 stay lines attached from your mast to a bridle off both amas. Curious what you use that for. Also how do you get a blue cockpit on a dune body ?? This has me scratching my head.

Too bad no wind but congrats for being a top finisher in your class.

My aka joints are getting very loose. After over 1,000 miles on the boat the joints are loose causing the amas to drag in low winds. I use the stays to lift the amas 4-6 inches to reduce the drag. One problem is that I can not furl the sail when the stays are deployed.

The blue on the cockpit is foam that I have glued to the hull. After the EC I had black and blues all over my body. The foam provides some cushion...

Terrific video, Paul. I especially liked the music--perfect. Usually I mute the volume on most videos.

Thanks for the post.

Is there any end to the problems with these ill-conceived slip-in joints?

Please do not get me wrong. I like the new joints better that the old pin style. I think Hobie just needs to address the corrosion problem with the stainless rivets and tighten up the fit. This winter I will disassemble the joint and tighten up the parts.
