The Watertribe Everglades Challenge will start on March 2, 2013.
http://www.watertribe.com/Default.aspx

There are six Hobie Islands registered. If you have though about this fun race you have until January 31 to register.

Don't think that you can do the full race...there is the shorter 67 mile Ultra Marathon starting at the same time.

The Hobie Islands are the perfect boats for this race.

Search "YouTube"...lots of videos to see what it is about.

Hey DogsLife,

I have been wanting to do the FL Ultra Marathon from Tampa to Placida in my TI. And I think I have a sailing/kayaking buddy talked into being the crew. Do you know if we are allowed to use the Mirage drives?

Also, I was reviewing their required equipment list, and it reads that we have to have a SPOT. Do we have to have a PLB for each crew member (2 for the TI) in addition to the SPOT?

Thanks!
Ted

mrbrightwork,

Yes you can use Mirage Drives. If you use a fully rigged TI you would be in Class 5. If there are enough Islands this year, then we will have a Class to our selves.

I thought that only one PLB is required per boat. If you register as a Watertriber you can send a e-mail to the Chief. The PLB is a Safety device required for insurance. The SPOT is more for tracking.

You can rent both the PLB and the SPOT. I go out by my self in all weather conditions and carry both.

Hope to see you on the beach...

OK ye brave ones, only Five Days left to register for the WaterTribe Everglades Challenge.

http://www.watertribe.com/

Feeling not so brave...then there is the ULTRA MARATHON that starts at the same time to the first EC Check Point.

http://www.watertribe.com/Events/UltraMarathon/Default.aspx

There are always plenty of Island supporters on the starting line. 8 Islands registered. I usually like to line up on the right side of the starting line. The drop off is a little better there. It would be nice to have the Islands close together to get that picture and let everyone know that Hobie Island is the ultimate WaterTribe Machine.

I'll see you both on the beach but it won't be in my ti...

And check out the hakas I built for her. They are 42" long X 48" wide and I can put one on each side or both on one side for sleeping.

Registration ends on the 31st, if your thinking of going for it stop thinking and start doing! Should be a nice calm year...

Cheers,

J

I'm looking forward to seeing that interesting boat you got from Chief Jesse. I love the haka sleeping platform. That will come in handy. Have you had a chance to sail it? How does it compare to the TI in regards to handling and performance?

Congratulations, fellows, for doing the EC. A group of us are going to be camped on Pavilion out of Chokoloskee on Mar 5-8 to watch some of the activities.

That is quite a boat. I hope you have it all together to get some on the Water Time.

Keith, I will not be passing Pavilion this year. I am going for the big Gator Tooth and want to be the first Hobie Island to do the Wilderness Waterway. Now I need to figure out how to fit through the Nightmare. Only way I would go on the outside if I am running extremely late and can't make the check point...

Paul, getting a Gator Tooth would be quite an accomplishment. Regarding Nightmare, you should try to hit it at high tide. Then, you would have 2 problems (but, a tight, shallow channel would not be one of them.) First, at high tide water can be everywhere and it can be difficult to follow the channel. Second, there may be downed trees that you have to drag your AI across. I'm not sure that you can use your fins through parts of Nightmare so have your paddle handy.

Good luck!

Keith

Post subject:  Watertribe Everglades Challenge Mobile Mapper

Since today is the last day to register, I wanted to mention that we finally finished development of a Watertribe Mobile Mapper App so you can monitor race progress from your mobile devices. Works on Android and iphone/apple mobile devices and pads.

For more information about the features of this app visit http://www.floridarobot.com

Captn,

It sails very well, fast and goes up wind better than the ti. In twenty knot wind yesterday, I topped out at 10.7mph. Close reaching, between 4 & 6. I was carrying 60 pounds of ballast to simulate the camping load and was smashing though four foot waves. I had a great time. The amas are more flexible than I would like but have plenty of floatation. I won't be afraid of the outside route if we have conditions like last year.

Cheers,

J

Excellent ! Can't wait to see it in person. It looks like a fun boat.

Well the Watertribe EC registration is closed now. It will be the biggest race ever. 117 boats on the starting line will be quite a show. Hobies will have their own class.

One question: Penguin Man, Hobie's own engineer has registered but not confirmed??? Matt, time to get Jim to commit...
