I was just wondering how far and steep the portage drag was.

Long, around the building sidewalks or steep, over the dam. Makes a bit of difference to the bigger boats.

You can always break the boat down to pieces, I guess. I'd hate to do it at 3 am though, on the 5th day.

I know some of you are thinking, "What difference does 300 yards make, in a 300 mile race!?" Near the end, maybe a lot.

Just ask the American pioneers. If a couple mountains and a few more miles didn't matter, UTAH would still be unsettled..

START OF DAY6 - 3.30 AM UPDATE

Our Hobie racers are all hunkered down for the night. Even Standupguy just decided to lay down. :roll: (This guy is a machine!)

Chief is resting on his AI in Florida Bay, about 15 miles from everyone's big goal.

And I am going to bed too,.. It's going to be a big day. Cheers.

For anyone who wants to see the Wilderness Waterway route, HERE is the map. A big group stayed at the Harney River Chickee last night and will be getting into Flamingo later today.

At almost 7:00 a.m. EST, it doesn't appear that Penguinman or Shred is moving out of Flamingo yet. Chief may just be awakening as he did push his Ok button. He is about halfway from Flamingo to Key Largo, depending on how he has to track or tack due to the winds. StandUpGuy is at Broad River Chickee. He paddled a long way last night!

And mirage drive backup power. I just finished peddling across Florida bay when that photo was taken, longest night of my life. Some of the channels are well marked others, not so much. All the entrances and exits have big markers with reflectors but I largely found my way by shining my spotlight at the shallow water at the edge of the channel and by hitting the bottom a lot.

The hakas were in sleep position in that photo, normally I keep one on each side. They measure 42" by 42" or 7' by 42" when sleeping. They also slide fore and aft to make it easier to get gear and set sails. Mostly, they were all the way back so I could use the spinnaker pole as a backrest.

I chose the tamanu over my ti for greater load carrying capacity, ease of sleeping onboard, hull shape, and dryer ride. It seems I was correct in my choice, finishing several hours ahead of the next island. It's hard to say for sure, I only reefed twice during the challenge, flew my little 100sq spin three days out of four, and the 250 sq spin once for several hours on day three when the wind had fallen to nothing. I doubt many others pushed their gear and bodies quite so close to the breaking point, so I might have been good in the ti.

Funny thing about sleeping near dogslife, there were some boaters camping on the beach that I went and talked to but no one else that I noticed. When I arrived at cp3, the cp captain asked about it, and I had no idea...

Full trip report later, need a real keyboard.

And now there's a drag race for 3rd, between Penguinman and Shred.

Could be a dead heat. Winds are 10mph out of the north/west. Shred's is moving downwind, and Jim's a little faster, on more of a reach. (Pedal-pedal, faster- faster!)

Penguinman already has his coveted "Gator Tooth Award" but Jim's still competing against the 2 other Gator "paddlers". Macattawa and Passaicpaddler are right on his heels.

Careful peddling to fast, after a night of pushing Sacha at 2~3 mph with a couple of sprints over 4, I have a very swollen knee and can barely walk. Otherwise, the mirage drive was a blessing. I can't imagine paddling anything bigger than a kayak more than a grew hundred feet but must have peddled 40 to 45 miles over the entire challenge.

Jim must have pedaled his ass off during the Wilderness, though.

I've been wondering, how much does that canoe weigh, rigged? And how shallow does it get in these areas of Fla Bay? Coral or silt?

It would be a drag to ground it, in sight of the finish (and onlookers).

With 3 miles to go, they are even. Jim has the edge but needs to jibe. How fast can he raise that spinnaker?

Windblown has left CP3 and headed to finish. Teak is right behind Penguinman and Shred.

I've been holding my breath to see what happened to Jim Czarnowski's overall race lead when the 2 "Gator Tooth" solo paddlers checked in at the finish. That close to Penguinman, they might get enough extra points to knock him out.

Way back in the pack, but not forgotten, our pal Juscuz (John Simms) is sailing hard in open water tonight to make up time. No word on what complications have held him back. Ran out of duct tape?

He's passing west of the Nightmare at this moment. Swiftly.

Wishing him the wind at his back, and dolphins on his bow for the rest of the journey.
