When we bought our Adventure Islands, I was less than impressed by the use of structural bungee cords. It just sounds silly. Bungees are not reliable! But they sure are convenient. That was 2007. I've been enjoying the convenience and ignoring the unreliability successfully ever since. One of my bungees is now frayed and near the point of parting. The others actually still seem fine. I never expected them to last this long. I guess they are more reliable than I thought. But this thread has motivated me to go around and replace all of them. I think a 5+ year lifespan is adequate. One of my akas is a "late Friday afternoon" aka and does not have the second pin in it. I have always just stretched the side bungee a bit further to the lower pin when folding the boat and hooked it on top of the ama bungee. I think that if I were to do an EC or something similar in my boat, all four bungees would be doubled. Even though ours have lasted a long time, I still don't really trust bungees. |

Re bungees, they do give us the advantage of being able to fold the Amas, and that's great (for most of us). Having too much pressure on them makes folding more difficult and stresses the attachments. So I find that a pair of medium tension cords is preferable to a really tight single connection. One bungee can be removed to allow folding and transport. |

After today, in very strong winds and gusts, I have decided to dump the bungees entirely. There is a better way to attach the Aka's. I'll be in touch. |

Keith, he drilled a hole in the plastic padeye to mimic the shock cord end fitting (tied a knot in the cord). |

The Padeye replaces the original holed fitting, then a bungee hole is drilled under, or beside the padeye. The redundant bungees are clipped on and unleashed or removed for transport/folding. Easy Peasy. Cheap and reliable. No need to reinvent the wheel. |
