Aluminum is a hot commodity for thiefs who turn them into recycling centers for cash. Any ideas on how to discourage the disassembly of the Trailex trailer when left unattended at the boat ramps ? |

Lock it up so it cant be towed away? A high quality padlock seems like cheap insurance. Maybe also a good cable lock through a wheel too. |

Thanks Blair. I do have the locks, which will keep the trailer from "rolling away" on its own. What I'm afraid of, is that someone with a ratchet set could unbolt the cross bars and maybe even the wheel assembly. Being an aluminum trailer, they would then trade in the pieces at a local recycling center for cash. Am thinking of possibly crushing the bolt threads so the nut cannot be removed, or maybe wrapping fiberglass and resin around the bolts. |

How about locking some components down with the really tough red 271 LocTite? Needs heat for nut removal. Simple, cheap, good looking & an effective theft deterrent. http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/10/15/ ... ed-271.htm CBull |

Is metal theft that big a problem where you sail? That's a bummer man. Maybe get some rust colored spray paint, make your trailer look like galvinized steel, not much value there! |

Yes, the Loctite sounds good ! Hope I never need to remove the bolts in the future. But then again, heating it up to 500 degrees will release the hold if ever necessary. Thought about painting it too, but did some online searches, and see that painting aluminum is not that easy. I think the Loctite will do the trick. That solution is much easier, cheaper, and nicer looking than what I had in mind with the fiberglass and resin. Thanks all for the suggestions ! |
