Has anyone had any experience modifying a Laser sailboat trailer to accommodate the Hobie supports for a TI? I was about to buy and modify a kit trailer when a friend offered to give me his (registered) Laser trailer. Haven't seen it yet but it's sure to be a bit too short. A Laser is 13'6" and the TI is 18'6'.

This is not a new concept. I have put TIs and AIs on pretty much every type of trailer on the block. The one thing you need to be sure of is the length of the tongue. The best thing to do is just set your TI on the laser trailer with the weight centered over the wheels, maybe set back slightly. If it looks too short, a good welder can add some tongue length cheaper than you can buy a good new trailer. The cradles are a must for the TI, the last thing you want to do support all that weight on two crossbars, it will cause it to deform.

When I sailed Lasers years back, the trailers were bare-boned with two harness straps similar to seat-belt webbing crossing the trailer to support the hull. We used to help protect the hull using a strip of carpet above the straps.
If it turns out your trailer is the same type it should do just fine if the draw bar is long enough. Just cushion the webbing with refrigeration lagging as thick as you can get your hands on. My Pirate Pillows are of the same stuff and my AI sits comfortably on them whilst on the roof-racks and on racks in the garage....Pirate

Thanks Liquid and Pilate. I'll get cracking with all that shortly.
