| Post subject: | Storage of TI Sail??? |
Just wondering the best method of storage for both short term (week) to long term (months)???? I have been leaving mine rolled up without the cover in my garage on top of foam pads on top the TI. Also, how about cleaning and preserving sail fabric at the end of the season??? Thanks much, I really appreciate this forum!!!

I use 303 or the Hobie spray on the sails 3-4 times a year for Hawaii (sunblock for fabrics & plastics). I don't wash them until I'm going to reapply. I store them in the Hobie sail bag wet, but we're on the dry side, so no worries of mold or mildew here. Biggest problem I've seen with the sails is tying them down too tight where the clear plastic is, which folds and creases it, causing cracks in the future. Tying lower near the spool and over half-way up the mast seems to be best. |

I just treated my sail this weekend and didn't like seeing those minor creases. Also - look out for those plastic clips that hold the battens, near the mast. While furled, they tear into the surrounding sail fabric and these cuts develop into holes along the middle of the mast... It's a design problem. At this point, I'm going to have to add a patch to the sail and tape over the clips to prevent this from ruining a 2 year old sail. |

I trim the length of the battens just a little, so the caps are just a little longer than their pockets so they still pull down when tied. Seems to help protect the sail from the caps. Also, I always tie every which way the caps to the sail grommets (so they don't leave) which may help protect the sail because of so much line wrapped around the caps.

Hi Bob. I'm referring to the thick rectangular white plastic caps that are screwed into the sail near the luff. (Name?) They anchor the base of the battens and are a source of friction and failure of the surrounding material. This is the 2nd sail I've had with this issue. I already have a hole developing in the sleeve material surrounding the mast... I'm sure it's from constant rubbing, while slightly reefed and sailing. I guess I should never furl.

Yep, I misunderstood. I too have some wear problems there. My earliest sail, the screws just peeked out leaving sharp points. I filed them. I've also had problems with a batten poking out through the bottom, so now I cushion them with a small piece of folded fabric and don't tied down quite as tightly. |

Another good tip. Think I'll do that to try to eek out a few more years from this sail. The RED is holding up nicely. |
