Post subject:  Trailering with boat cover on?

I was wondering if others on here are trailering their boats with the storage cover on. I think I remember reading somewhere that the cover was rated to do this. I have done it for short distances and had no problems but the cover does flap in the wind quite a bit. My concern is that this would cause the waterproof lining of the cover to fail. I am getting readiy to transport the boat 750 miles and would like to keep the cover on if possible. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure of the specific cover that you are talking about, but generally speaking, flapping hurts fuel mileage, and risks damaging the boat. If your cover flaps, it's probably less than ideal to leave it on while towing.

If you are using the hobie cover, the answer is no. don't trailer with the cover on.

Yes, I have the hobie cover. Thanks for the info. I really thought I read somewhere that you could trailer with it on. Maybe I didn't. Getting old really sucks.

The correct answer is "no", the Hobie cover isn't intended for trailering. But in my case, I successfully towed our TI over 1100 miles down I-95 from Delaware to Florida without having first asked the question. The cover held up fine, but it was new at the time. If making such a trip again, I'd probably do it uncovered.

bluehen,
Thanks for the info. I just towed the TI from western NC to West Palm FL without the cover. I have gone from NC to SC with the cover on several times without a problem but its probably not the best for the long term durability of the cover. I also feel I can get the boat tied down more securly wihout the cover on.

We just trailered two 800 mile trips with the Hobie cover on.....with 2-3 additional tie down straps over the cover and providing more hold to the trailer. No problems and no apparent wear to the cover.

If the Hobie cover isn't meant for trailering, why does it have the 'red flag' for the stern? Oh, since mine is Dune maybe it is supposed to lead the way for the other hull colors.

The documentation that comes with the cover (made by Danuu) and their website indicate that it is meant for use during transport.
