Hi

I'm currently modifying a Jetski trailer. It is going to be double deck to transport a TI and a large fishing kayak.

Originally I extended the drawbar so the front of the kayak to the axle would be 3 metres. However now that I am looking to extend the rear of the trailer I realise that my tongue weight ( I've always called it "ball weight" ;-D ) is going to be too light. (There is more steel being added at the rear than the front because of the trailer design) so I need to build a new draw bar extension. Rather than stuffing it up a second time I thought I should ask for some advice.

Can someone give me the measurement from the axle to the front or rear of the kayak that will give a reasonable tongue weight? I'm thinking that the centre of the kayak should be around 1 to 1.5 metres (3 to 5 feet) in front of the axle for correct balance.

Thanks

Brad

Brad,
On my trailer the distance from the tongue coupling to the axle centre is 3.5m and from axle centre to end of rear overhang is 1.9m.
How much weight on the tongue will be affected also by the position of your deck frame, gear storage options and other kayak.
Without having a TI you may be jumping the gun a bit trying to get the balance right.
