Post subject:  Checking for hull deformation

I am considering buying a 2011 tandem island but have a concern about the way it has been stored.

The owner stored it in a garage, but says he left it on two homemade wheel dollies attached at each end , with no support for the amas, and nothing else between.

From what I have read here, this would seem to be a cause for concern. Other than this, the TI looks like it is in good shape with no observable significant damage, only minor.scrapes and scratches for its age.

My question is whether there is a way to assess the impact of this storage method, and whether there might be other concerns about the stresses this might cause.

Your thoughts on this are greatly appreciated.

Check the scupper holes for cracks, then look at the bottom for oil-canning. Most bottom dents will come out by leaving the hull bottom up in the sun, or with hot water and pressure from the inside on the worse of them.

Sorry Bob, what's oil-canning ? I can only guess that it's distortion or ripples in the hull.

If you leave a sealed oilcan in the sun, its sides will suck in a bit, like the bottom of an Island hull when a point pressure is too much

Dents that don't belong :)

Hi Bob, thanks for the quick reply.

My concern is not about dents or oil canning, but bowing over the length of the hull from long term storage supported only at the end points. I didn't observe any cracks around the scupper holes, or dents.

Flipping the hull over and eyeing down the bottom surface should show problems of that nature. As long as the hull has not been over stressed to breaking, it should always return mostly back to the original mold shape with a little sun and its heat. If you are not comfortable with how this one has been stored, keep looking for another used one.

Thanks again for your help Bob.

I think I will take a second look this weekend. It has been stored inside in a garage throughout that time and not subject to a lot of sun or significant heat as the climate on Vancouver Island is pretty temperate, so... maybe I'll be on the water soon!

Good luck! Let us know how it goes... :)
