Calling all you hearty AI sailors!

Well, it's that time of year again. Time for the 2010 2nd Annual New Years Day Adventure Island Polar Bear Sail. We're coordinating the outing through the Chesapeake Hobie Island Group page at meetup page.
http://www.meetup.com/Hobie-Adventure-Island-Group/

We'll be launching from the floating dock at Backyard Boats, 222 Severn Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403. That puts us into Spa Creek, and the Annapolis Harbor. From there we can cruise the famous Ego Alley, or head out into the Severn River, and even the Chesapeake Bay.

We want to launch around noon. With any luck we can be on the water in time to watch the start of the Annapolis Yacht Club's Hangover Bowl. The Hangover Bowl is a New Years tradition (not unlike the Annual New Years Day Adventure Island Polar Bear Sail, except they've been doing it for 40 years), a yacht race, starting & ending on Spa Creek, near the AYC. Some call them serious sailors. But really now, how serious can they really be? I mean, come on, they're up inside a nice dry cockpit! Their race starts at approximately 12:00 noon, so if we miss the start, we can still catch the finish. We'll see them on the water as well. We will want to make sure we stay out of the way of the racers though. It's just common courtesy.

Last year there were just two of us, myself & Glenn_SouthRiver. We've got five boats signed up for this year, so it should be fun.

Last years conditions were a balmy 34 deg f for both the water and the air temperatures. Suffice to say, you MUST come equipped for the conditions (that is, you provide your own). Drysuits are pretty much a requirement, along with plenty of insulating layers underneath. Glenn & I were out there for about three hours last year, and Glenn had ice forming on his waterboot when we came back in. After sailing for a couple hours, we'll return and head over to the Boatyard Grill for something to warm us back up.

For those folks who can't make it, for whatever reasons (hangover is NOT an excuse!), here's a link to Annapolis Harbor Webcam on the Annapolis Yacht Club web site. If the webcam doesn't come up, click on Shoreside, and then Annapolis Harbor Webcam. Our launch point is off to the right side of the harbor webcam view, or downstream to the left if you click on the Spa Creek Webcam.

So, come on out and join the fun. Nobody ever said that sailing had to be a fair weather activity. You paid enough for your AI, might as well get as much use out of your investment as you can!

Happy Sailing,
- Jim L
