I know I'm a little slow on the tech trail but here we go anyway.

I've been looking for ways to chart trips done, and trips planned, on the internet and accidently found a great method via google maps. For those tech knuckle heads like myself it's so simple and efficient you must try it.

Go to google maps click the "new" icon top right of screen and select http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&tab=wl distance measuring tool enable and play around with it and find distances Lat and Long options and more. You can plan and plot your brains out planning new and plotting old trips, it gives you a good idea of what is possible in a day, a week etc. I love it, give it a try and tell me what you think.

For those who have known about this for ages- thanks for telling us?

Well; for us not so tech savvy, what do I do?

I went to the site and clicked new, it showed me that I could enable things but how do I make it a 'plan' for the trip and then get it onto my GPS????

Remember some of us (me) is a dummie :|

open and zoom a map where you have been or want to go. Click new as previously described enable distance measuring tool and LatLng marker and save changes.

You will now see the map with a ruler at bottom left corner, click it to activate distance ruler. Left click starting point and plot your trip by left clicking course desired, if you want LatLng for any point right click and select drop LatLng marker. You need to play awhile until you suss it out and perfect your LatLng shots. I don't have GPS as yet but i presume if you have Lat & Long points you can put that into your GPS?

Here's a way to plot trips in Google Earth and transfer the data into a GPS without having to manually input all the lat/long data:
