Post subject:  Rudder up/down line diagram

I just used my AI in the Watertribe Ultra Marathon. The rudder became stuck. It steers fine, but will not raise or lower. One of the Hobie guys in the Challenge looked at it and thinks there is a twist in the line where it goes around the drum.

I have done a search, and looked at the manuals, but I can't find a diagram of how the line should go around the drum. Where does it enter and exit the drum? Does anyone know how it should look?

Thanks

And by the way, the tandem AI looks really good. Both seats have rudder control. You can us it solo from the rear seat and keep the waves out of your lap.

Ok, just went and checked and mine looks different.

I have a 2009 Hobie AI. It has the up/down pull handles.

The two screws that are shown that the up down line connect to are not on my rudder. There are holes for the screws, but no screws.

The lines exit the holes in the rudder as described, but instead of going to the screws, they are simply tied in a knot.

There is also a spring loaded pin in the channel the string sits in. The string goes through a hole in the pin.

The routing of the lines to and around the drum is the same, I believe. We simply stopped using the screws and tied the ends together to help limit chafe and cutting issues from the screws. It is possible that the plunger is hung up inside. You can lift the plunger and remove the small spring to de-activate the feature. The intention was for a hold down plunger, but some are causing hang ups. The boat has a cleat for holding the rudder down, so the plunger is not actually needed.

Thanks,

Jim checked out the system starting with the handles all the way back to the rudder itself at the dock. He mentioned removing the plunger also.

I think I might try removing the spring to see what happens.

It jammed the day before the marathon the same way, but when I took it apart and put it back together it seemed to work OK. When I was taking it apart it looked liked the cord jumped out of the groove and was jamming the rudder. You could see a small loop of cord sticking out between the drum and rudder.

Is there a similar TnS manual for the later version?

And by the way: mine got stuck down one day after heavyy conditions (but no sailing that day) : 2m waves in 30 to 40 kts of wind. Checked all line once on firm ground, all was fine.
The trick just was to force the rudder up by hand, something clicked in inside the drum and all went back to normal and is now (after 3 or 4 outings sailing).
I'm quite interested in a single pdf for the 2009 setup too (T handle as opposed to lever in the term used in the pdf support page I found here : http://www.hobiecat.com/support/index.html ).

This has a lot of the details. It is an assembly manual for the kit.
