Dealer provided me with a set of new collars for my akas.

After replacing the first one, forward port aka, I inserted the aka and it would not lock into the boat. I put the old one back on and it would not lock either.

When you closely compare the new collars with the original ones there does not appear to be any difference. Dealer could not see a difference either.

I then tried pulling on the forward starboard aka and found that by wiggling it up and down when you pulled it came out also.

How can I tell if I have two sets of the old style collars or two sets of the new style? I have already been knocked down once when an aka popped out and folded in.

Hey Jerry! Thought I better bump this one for you.

When my dealer swapped the old collars for new, I could see a clear difference. The 'latch' part of the collar was a fair bit wider, to better engage the akas.

The pic below is front and back of an old collar. "A" is the thin side where the latch first engages, and "B" is the thick side where it actually catches. On measuring the thickness at "B", it looks like 4mm.

On the new collars, the "B" side is considerably thicker, so the 'ramp' A-B is 'steeper'. My guess is ~6mm. When compared side by side, there is no mistaking it.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any identifying marks etc on them, so you can be sure you have the right ones, other than a visual inspection.

Hope this helps a bit. Maybe if someone (Matt?) can take a pic of the new collars, they could be compared?

Oh, just remembered, the new collars are too thick - the screw holes don't line up, so one side of the collar has to be sanded back. That was the case with mine, and several others have reported the same on the forum.

Max,

Thanks.

I was concentrating on looking at the outside of the collar for a difference. I now know that my boat came with the old collars and the ones the dealer gave me are the new ones.

That being said, one of my akas won't lock in with either one anyway.

Max,

My aka locking problem was caused by a case of the dumb ass.

I looked inside the bracket and saw how the catch grabs the inside of the collar and realized I had the flat side out. I flipped the collar around and everything works fine.

Thanks again for your help.

I also want to thank Mitch Zeissler too for sending pictures and an explanation.

Jerry

 Hands up anyone who hasn't had one of those!

Glad you got the problem sorted out... now get out on the briny and sail your butt off! :D
