Post subject:  TI Rudder up line stopped working

Today was the second day to have my new TI on the water. The wind was light (0-5 mph), so we peddled for about 3 miles on water that was either like glass or slightly rippled. Upon nearing our beaching point we tried to raise the rudder after releasing the down line and found that neither up line would work. Upon inspecting the lines in the hull the best I could, I found no broken lines and the block between the front and rear up line controls seems to be functioning properly. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have an idea what may be causing this?

I have not experienced this. I did over tighten the drum slightly and that made it very hard to raise the rudder.

The up lines seem like there is no tension other than the bungee tension. The up lines simply pull all the way out with little impact to the rudder.

When I pull the up line it feels snug, then the bungie tension and then I feel the weight of the rudder and it comes up. Sorry not much help on this one, hope u can solve.

I suspect your problem is that the cable has jumped the sheave (the round wheel part of the pulley), and is caught between the sheave and the cheeks of the pulley, causing a jam that cannot be fixed without disassembly. The same thing happened to me last weekend and it required the dealer to fix it.

See my earlier posting, complete with a photo of the damage done to the pulley:

Mitch - I first read through many rudder problem posts, including yours, and used this information in investigating my problem. Unfortunately, my problem is different than yours. The line has not jumped the sheave. The problem appears to be somewhere between the block (roughly under the center hatch) and the rudder. My current guess as to what the problem may be is that a knot slipped at an attachment point at the block or somewhere further aft. Both the fore and aft rudder up lines pull freely, but don’t seem to pull far enough to pull enough slack out of the line to lift the rudder. So, the line between the block and the rudder must have become too long, which makes me think a knot slipped. It worked flawlessly the first day on the water.

I'm reluctant to attempt a fix at home because I am uncertain what the problem is. I am also reluctant to take it to my dealer for fear that they don't have a mechanically inclined person on staff to work on the boat. My dealer (the only one in OK) is a very low volume retail outlet with no repair/maintenance shop or staff. I will probably end up tackling it myself because I will at least then understand what was done should something happen on the water.

Ron - I just got back in from shortening the down line between the block and the rudder. Now it works flawlessly.
