 Post subject: Main sheet is fraying

I have been out in my TI 7 or 8 times and my main sheet has started fraying already.

The outer jacket is showing excesesive signs of wear on the new TI and on the 1 year old AI the main sheet looks like new even though it has been used a lot more.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Where is the wear, exactly? Mine hasn't had an issue at all. Are you experiencing wear at the cleat or ?

Yes I have the chafe plate installed.

I just went out and looked at my sheet and it has a couple about frayed areas that are about 4 feet long that I can see with the boat in my garage on a trailer. I probably need to step the mast and try to figure out what is going on.

I would include a picture but I don't know how to post one. The outer sheath of the line looks like someone took a wood rasp to it.

I hooked the clew hook to the eye on the front of my TI and drew the sheet snug. The frayed area starts on one line at the aft aka brace, goes all the way up to through the block and back to about the 8 inch hatch in the front cockpit.

The block does not appear to have any ragged edges and it turns freely.

I have the same issue on my TI main sheet - it looks like the chafing points are from simply going through the main sheet cam cleat at the rear seat. The amount of wear is similar to what is pictured above, but I know from having been on a lot of boats over the years that lines with a lot of stress will do that. I just keep an eye on them and replace as needed, usually once per year or so.

That's severe fraying for a near new TI that's only been out 7-8 times! Jerry, have you had a really close look at the cam cleats for any rough edges etc?

Max,

Yes I looked at the jam cleat in the rear cockpit and I could not find any rough spots. I wonder if it is because the turn block for the rear sheet is too close to the jam cleat causing too tight of an angle.

I agree with you Max, it is severe fraying for a new boat. At the rate it's going I'll have to replace my main sheat twice a year which is rediculous.

whosyourbob seems to think it's normal for lines under stress but I don't agree. My wife and I used to own & sail a 60,000 lb ketch. The main sail was almost 1000 square feet so you can imagine the stress on the main sheet and we didn't have this problem.

The boat is going to the dealer on Thursday in order to have another set of eyes look at the problem with the sheet and the rudder.

I continue to think it's normal.

I've been on other boats where the lines frayed like that for the first several months, then stopped and didn't fray anymore. I'll continue to keep an eye on our TI lines, but lines - to me - are like oil in a car; they need to be changed out at specific intervals, which tends to vary with the car.

Mitch,

It sounds like you and I are the only ones with fraying mainsheets. If you are right and it is normal most of the boats should be having the same thing happen to them.

Anyone else having the same issue?

Keep in mind we continue to really hammer ours with lots of heavy use and pretty varied conditions. We have yet to see another AI, let alone another TI.

I'm not sure what you mean. I have had an AI for about a year and sailed it really hard at least 5 times more than the TI with no signs of wear of the sheet.

Mitch, remember that this is after just 7-8 trips out. Either there is something wrong with the sheet itself - unlikely, but not impossible - or there is somewhere that's chafing it.

I have this issue from the back seat. Front seat main sheet is fine. My line in back looks like the picture above. Have not figured out why this is happening either.
