I have a 2009 AI with the original black rudder pin still in. I bought some of the newer, improved gray pins, but I'm confused about a detail. The new pins have the guide for the up/down lines built into the the top of the pin. When I bought them a few months ago the dealer said to cut off the guide...but now I'm not sure if he meant the guide on the pin or the guide on the TnS rudder assembly. I'm pretty sure he meant to cut off the guide on the rudder because the pin guide was superior, but before I do that I thought I'd ask here first. Thanks for any help. Blair |

Thanks Matt. I have another question if you don't mind and I couldn't find an answer by searching the forum. What is the correct orientation of the pin? I see it has a spiral indent in it that seems to suggest that it should face a particular direction, but I don't know what direction that is. Before and after cutting the front guide off, the pin would not fit in the space inside the plastic without bending quite a bit the farther down I pushed it in. I had to cut more of the area that held the guide up to make it fit and I'm hoping I didn't have to cut too much. Thanks again. Blair |

Open side to starboard (right). This is designed to keep the down line tension from causing a hard left turn. Keeps the lines over the center of the rudder pin. Rudder would flop to a left turn on it's own without the guides in the rudder housing or rudder pin. We experienced some line wear issues with the housing guides, so removed them... then had to create the new guide as part of the pin. |

Matt, I've also noticed some wear on the rudder line of my wife's 2009 AI. Here is a picture:  That guide, that is what should be cut off at the housing, right? And, at the same time, install the "new," that is, newest pin with guide, right? Would you recommend replacing that frayed line? I guess that would require replacing the tube/line with a new assembly? Keith |
