Post subject:  AI sail repair
The sail on my AI has a few holes chewed by mice while in storage. The sail is still in good shape so I'd rather not replace, but just repair them. What is the best method for repairing it?

Will a sail repair tape work for long term use? This tape comes in both yellow and blue so I could match up the colors to make it blend better. Though color blending doesn't matter much, I just want the sail to function normally. http://www.sailrite.com/Ripstop-Repair-Tape-Blue-2-x-25

This picture shows the complete sail so you can get an ideal of the size of the damage.

The large damage is about 21" long and 1" at the widest rip width.

The smaller hole is about 2" by 4".

At this point, it probably can't hurt to try the tape. I'm not convinced that it will work, but to most people, I think those sails would be garbage now. Sorry.

In our area, there are a couple of sail repair shops that could fix that for less than the price of a new sail. That's probably your most economical route if you want to avoid replacing them.

If the sail tape doesn't hold, you'll have the benefit of being able to pedal wherever you need to go.

When I had my Adventure Island, I used to store the sail furled on the mast in a 4" PVC pipe. It works great to keep the UV off, as well as the bugs, and yes, the mice.

I liked it so much that when I bought the Bravo, with the same type of furling sail, I bought a 6" PVC pipe to fit it's sail and mast in.

What is the name of the material for the Hobie Island sails? The colored section and the clear sections are of different materials. I think only the colored section are damaged on my sails. I'd like to research further on repairing that material before bringing it to sail shop. Thanks.

HM, that sail is beyond tape. It needs a skilled surgeon.

I too would recommend you just get a sailmaker to fix it rather than trying a DIY , as both areas are relatively important to the performance of the sail, and while tape might look OK cosmetically, it might be false economy compared to getting it done right in the first place. Sorry for the bad news

I'd be getting a sail maker to fix it at very least.
You know it's going to fail during that big trip you've been planning....
