Years ago I suggested Hobie should make an "adaptor" so that it would be easy for owners to attach a shop vacuum or leaf blower to the AI (& now Tandem). Nothing has ever come of my suggestion as far as I know.

What do you (KB & NOHUHU) do to attach a vacuum out put to an Island?

I also suggested that Hobie might even come out with a leak tester (pump + adaptor attachment.) Now I can see where they might not want to do that because people might test their boats and then come back to Hobie w/ all sorts of minor problems. Still, it would be nice if every Island owner didn't have to come up with (develop) their own test system.

For AI's, I use the exhaust of a small shop-vac into the larger drain hole, using a piece of drip hose (remove the plug first). Excess air goes out the front hatch, so you can't check that area well, but works well for most leaks. A piece of duct-tape can hold the vac hose to the drip hose to the hull. Don't worry about getting all the air into the hull. It doesn't take much air from a vac to work.

I also use a reversed shop vac with a reducer on it for the older hulls, (which have the large side drains). Keeping a loose fit, and cracking one hatch so it's not too much pressure. A shop compressor could blow the thing apart!

I think one of those airbed inflators or battery powered pumps would be just about right for the job.

I believe the new AI/TI hulls only have those ridiculously tiny rear bungs, so I think I'll have to rig up a cardboard hatch adaptor for my tests now.

Between all the soap and the vacuuming, my wife thinks I'm out there cleaning up the boat.

She likes things tidy. ;-)
