Post subject:  Need help determining how I should make repairs to Hobie AI

Hey guys,

I recently purchased an older Hobie AI and am trying to figure out what I should do about the existing AKAs & xbars. All 4 of the AKAs pull out of the xbars so I need to replace the plastic clips in the xbars and possibly the collars on the AKA hings.. if these parts even exist anymore. Also 2 of the AKA hings have cracks running down the length of them on the outward sides. Of course these AKAs and xbars also show normal signs of wear and have little to no paint left on them.

I've found all of the parts I believe I would need to fully replace the existing set but I'm not sure I want to spend $600.. Regardless I may have to. Does anyone know whether or not the bolt patterns line up between the older xbars and the newer xbars? Also I assume there would be no other issues with using newer AKAs and xbars with older everything else? I assume the mast diameter hasn't changed.

If anyone has information or ideas please feel free to let me know. I need to get this thing ready for fishing season!

You may be confused as to which version of crossbar / aka you have. The newer version (v2) has castings that are attached to the akas and hinge. They slide into the crossbars and lock with a 2 button plastic part that hooks to the collar on the aka casting.

Newer versions are most all anodized aluminum and not painted.

v1 crossbar / akas connect via a hinge pin and were originally powder coated aluminum.

Parts for v2 are readily available as are parts for v1.

You can use v1 or v2 on any hull.

The original mast had a pin on it's base and that fit into a hole in the mast receiver. The mast receivers were hand laid fiberglass and used a stainless tab to release the mast.

Current masts have a hole in the mast base and a pin in the mast receiver. Mast receivers are injection molded and have a plastic lever to release the mast.

Thanks Matt - you are correct, I was confused. The guy I bought the yak from made it sound like this was the older design. Maybe he was being sarcastic when he talked of upgrading to the older design.

Any idea how much a new set of the V2 plastic parts (latches and collars) would be?

Thanks again.
