Greetings folks, I just bought a Tandem and overall am happy with the boat. One trouble spot I have had is getting the sail to fully and completely unfurl. It looks good on the shore and furls up nice and tight for peddling out (straight upwind at my favorite launch) but when I unfurl it underway the top of the sail remains twisted by a half turn and does not allow the sail to fully develop. The mast does not seem to be bound up rather the sail is just twisted around the mast and there is no force acting on it at the top. Has anyone else experienced this issue? |

This is due to the two halves of the mast being slightly out of line. To fix this, each of you hold one end firmly and try to twist in the direction needed, which I believe is clockwise on this occasion. If you are unable to fix it this way, undo the downhaul (sail to furling drum) and slide the sail up over the top of the mast, and pull the two halves of the mast apart and rejoin with the top realigned with the bottom by 180 degrees to fix. |

Also, a piece of Duct tape around the seam helps protect the sail from any rough or sharp edges, and helps stop rotation between the two halves of the mast. |

Bob: I like your fix better than what I did (wish I had thought of doing that instead....) I put a little sand in the joint to keep it from rotating, now it's stuck, and I can't get it apart without force. Bob |

Yea sand, pretty dumb idea, it's still stuck almost a year later. Fortunately I never have to break the mast down, I typically just furl the sail and lay it on top of the hull for transport on my trailer. Bob |

The ferrule is a very poor fit. I trimmed off a quarter inch from the bottom of the top mast section which then allowed it to seat on the ferrule with a good friction fit. Failing going to that extent (although it is the proper way to fit the ferrule) a wide piece of duct or Gorilla tape all the way around the mast joint will do as well. |

I'd have to disagree because that's not how good ferrules work. A tight taper fit is assembled with what is commonly called a "bayonet lock." The two sections are mis-aligned and brought together until just snug, then twisted into alignment which locks them in place. To get them apart, you twist in the opposite direction and pull apart. Because furling and unfurling turn both sections at the same time, they don't come apart nor loosen. I have written some articles for our industry on precision building and fitting of ferrules and they would apply to multi-piece carbon fiber boat masts as well. My only concern is that some folks may not be comfortable with the trimming of sections or spigots and therefore the tape is going to be the best solution for most. |

Tom, Happy to pass along any details to our engineers on that. Many of our two part masts had locking features in the past, even when not furling type, so something we have done before for some reason or another. |

I'll send you some information tomorrow. As I understand it, the masts are made by another company and I don't think furling is part of what their normal masts are expected to do, so what you have there is purely for shipping and customer transportation purposes (being able to break down into a shorter length). |
