Post subject:  Replacing the OEM rudder on the Hobie PA

I just received the larger rudder for my PA & having a difficult time removing the screws from the rudder. I have used a penetration oil & it does not want to release. Why is one screw a flat head & the other a phillips head screw? HELP

Not "sure" why they are different, but this is a "sister screw" system that is custom machined. Likely the slot end is machined and the Phillips screw on the other end is purchased. We would do Phillps on both ends if it were possible.

Pull the rudder and post from the hull. This next part will take several hands or a good setup on a work bench. Place a screw driver in a vise pointing up. Lay the assembly onto that driver inserted into the bottom screw. For the top driver, clamp a vise grip to the shaft. Insert into the top screw. While tapping the driver handle with a mallet, apply light rotational force on the vise grip/screw driver combo. This works like an impact driver to both force the drivers into the screw heads and apply rotational forces to release them.

The phillips head is gouged from my efforts. I guess the only alternative is to drill it out.We have two PAs & I have the new rudder for both. Any suggestions on this?

There is a tool called an easy out. May work here. Reverse bit sort of thing. Drill the head. Insert the easy out and turn. It bites in harder as you turn.

Also something I found called a speed out: http://www.amazon.com/Speed-Out-Damaged-Screw-Extractor/dp/B00IRL3WP4/ref=sr_1_2/178-9629369-4614048?ie=UTF8&qid=1401725152&sr=8-2&keywords=easy+out+tool
