Hello Folks,

I will soon be buying a Tandem Island and it will probably be a used one to save on cost. Can anyone provide some tips of things to check on a prospective used boat to help ensure it is a good purchase? I have never owned a Hobie product but I have a long history with boats including sailing vessels so I know things can sometimes be hidden, unintentionally or not, that are good to know about before plunking down the cash. So I appreciate any tips you all can give.

Thanks in advance!

Bill

Know where to find the serial number, the last two digits will tell you the year it was manufactured for. It's back near the rudder engraved on the side of the yak near the waterline.

Tall tell signs of age, does it have a twist and stow, those we're pre 2012's. Check the wells for cracks near the mirage drive area. Check for cracks/rips in the scupper cart holes, on the TI there are two sets. Check for cracks in the first aka mast receiver area for stress. Are all the delirium balls in place? Check to see if the mast cross brace is loose.

Most important, take it out on the water and see if it functions correct, sail, pedals, rudder, spend a little time then check for water in the hull. A little bit, like a couple cups is no issue in choppy water or over time.

I think it's going to be similar to any sail boat. It really depends on the age of the boat too, but here are the things that I would check:
  1. Check running rigging.
  2. Check the hull for any distortions, cracks, welds, etc. If there are scratches and slight gouges that would be normal wear and tear.
  3. If tramps are included check for dry rot.
  4. Check the sail for condition.
  5. Check that the drives are in good working order.
  6. Check that the akas aren't bent/creased/nicked.
  7. Check all bungees for elasticity
  8. Take it for a test sail...
    1. Check that the hatches don't leak.
    2. Look inside the boat for any leaks after the sail.
  9. It should include everything that was delivered with the boat initially...
    1. 2 vantage seats or seat pads (depending on the year)
    2. 2 mirage drives
    3. 2 cassette plugs
    4. 2 paddles
    5. paddle "T" handles
    6. aka carry bag
    7. through hull fittings (depending on the year)
    8. 1 gear bucket with dividers
    9. rudder bungee
    10. sail cover
    11. some extra shear bolts and at least 1 extra rudder pin
    12. an owner's manual is nice, but you can always download the PDF
  10. If it's on a trailer and it's included check the condition of the wheels/tires, suspension, cradles/bunks, wiring, etc.

I'm sure I'm missing something, but it's at least a start. Good luck with the purchase!

Thanks Mark and Tom, I do appreciate it. I will use your notes to make a checklist to take when I go look at used TIs.

Hmm, I replied to this yesterday but somehow it is not here. Thanks Tom and Mark, I will use your points to prepare a checklist which I will consult when inspecting a potential purchase.
