Post subject:  AI Hull leakage?

It seems somewhere on this forum, there was mention of leakage of a gallon or more of water into the hull of an AI during a day trip.

Is this a problem w/ all AI's? How much leakage have you found?

Leak in a hull? There are a few possible leak points to look for.

The forward hatch, if fully submerged, can leak. This may happen when the wave height causes the bow to dive through a wave.

The steering or rudder up / down handles may leak if submerged or under water / waves. Likewise the line exit points can leak if underwater. This is the most likely entry point as the stern is constantly doused in rough conditions.

If the hull is leaking excessively, there could be a crack somewhere or a damaged scupper well. Worst case is a crack in the drive well. Some '06 models have reported cracks in the forward end of the drive well.

In any case, you can locate the leak by using the "leak detection" information referenced in our kayak forum FAQ (Top topic in the kayak forums)
