Post subject:  AI Mast Holder

I thought I posted this, but can't find it anywhere. So if it's here in some forum I forgot about please forgive me. OTOH maybe I forgot to hit submitt after preview???

I went to Ace looking for a 4" fitting I could convert to a mast holder for the AI.

Realize that the old 20 ft sq sail could be stashed. The AI needs a holder for:

1. Draw bridges

2. Putting sail away after reaching fishing destination,

3. Getting sail out of way while fighting large fish.

etc etc..

Instead of letting me purchase a 4" connector a staff member went to their supply room and cut me two rings off some surplus ABS 4" pipe. I then cut one in half, and mounted it with hose clamps.

Hopfully the bungie cord will keep a wave from bouncing the thing out of it's holders.

I don't know how long the ABS will standup before cracking

There should be room in the AI after market for a more professional made version. Either Hobie could contract for them, or have a third party handle the item.

Dan I finally got a good look at your yak

Yakama Racks has a mount called a Multi Mount, it can be re configured to go on the aka's and hold down the mast as you go out, like you are showing here

I did notice the Sifsto Style tube

I thought I was the only guy whose boat looks like that before the launch

Have you seen the YakPAK, by Precision PAK?

I am working closely with them to develop a whole line of kayak fishing specific gear. I use there biggest pak and it really saves me time and keeps my crap organized. The PAK even can withstand a flip. YES, I flipped the AI, without the AMA's. That is a whole other story for a different time. But the PAK didn't open as I flipped the boat back over and there wasn't a garage sale. The PAK also has lots of velcro pockets for your stuff you need quickly

We will be featuring there second generation PAK on www.kayakfishingmagazine.net next week

I been thinking of doing something like this for quite some time, I usually furl up the sail and disconnect the lines when I get to my fishing spot but I noticed the tall mast sways a lot and make creaking noises that feels uncomfortable for me. Do you tie down the mast to the kayak for added security?

Sweet

Do you mean when the mast is in the horizontal holders? Yes with the bungie illustrated.

If you mean when it's furled no. But make sure your cross piece bolts have been tighten and inserted with loctite

It's only turned at 90 degree to hull. Like I stated don't know if it will take a hit.
