Post subject:  Up/Down Rudder Question

I took delivery of an AI last week, after a 10 day delay in getting a replacement rudder casting that was broken in transit. I'm not sure if the Up/Down control lines were reversed at the factory or when they reinstalled the new part but in any case the "up" control is on the right side of the cockpit, complete with cam lock and the "down" control is on the left, with no cam lock. I am fine with the arrangement, have installed a new cam lock on the "down" control and it seems to work well.

Is there any reason that this whole process should be put back to factory specs?

Yakking on Flathead Lake in Montana (snow the last two days!!).

chrish,

I was expecting more knowledgeable people to respond.

I don't think it makes any difference as long as the lines are adjusted properly so they lift and lower the rudder as designed.

From what you describe Chris, it sounds to me like they labelled the controls incorrectly. If that's the case, you're rocking and there's no need to do anything except switch the labels.

They do have the lines switched. Down with the CAM lock is supposed to be on the right. The up is on the left and should automatically retract back into the hull with no need for a cam lock. You should be fine now that you added the cam lock on the left, just make sure that you don't have the up locked with the line pulled out when you try and lower the rudder and you should be good to go.

The down control must have the cleat to hold the rudder in the down position for higher speed sailing.

Maybe can be restrung at the rudder itself.
