I have a PA12 and use the front hatch as a cooler. I had an old 9mm wet suit that I cut up and insulated the outside of the tub and inside of the lid with the pieces. One load of ice from my refrigerator ice maker lasts a full 6 hour trip off San Diego in the summer. It does add a bit of weight but with my batteries and gear stored aft I find the yak rides very well.

Also there have been quite a few reports of front hatches taking on water so all I did to help seal the lid was cross the bungies (stretch them to the oposite side post) I have turned the PA over (on purpose) and run through 3-4 foot breaking surf with no water entering the front hatch. I think the addition of the hatch lining also helps it seal.

I don't want that weight up front. I have a cooler behind the seat for fish or dry storage. I removed the bucket from the center hatch and can get a small tackle bag and a soft sided cooler in there for drinks & snacks with everything reachable without leaving the seat.
