True Test for PA flip in Rough Conditions

Good video here. Can anyone tell me how so much water can get in the hull? I am guessing it would be from the front hatch. Can anything be done to prevent this?

If you have weight in the forward hatch it can push the hatch open while upside down. A locking web strap would be a good idea to hold it closed.

Shouldn't the locking strap be a feature on the PA and provided by Hobie. This is definitely a PA design and safety flaw.

It is something I have asked engineers to have a look at. Upside down is not the expected position of the boat, but certainly as shown, it can happen.

Could the water be coming in from the rod tubes as well?

The tubes are sealed. They are plastic pipe that is pinched at the bow ends.

Uh .....mine are NOT sealed ....... and iit seems others aren't either since it hs been mentioned more than once here.

After a week of heavy rains here n Balto I had so much water inside the PA that the front storage tray was floating and straining against the bungy restraints. Water came pouring out of the rod tubes when I tried to lift the front to drain some of the water. To be fair, this was am early demo units so this might have changed but mine are not sealed.

The intention is that they are sealed. From day one. You can pull the tubes out and determine where the leak is.

Fyi... trapped water that freezes can fracture a tube.

the buckle strap that i made really fixes the issue on the front hatch cuz u can tighten in down good, i put a water hose all around the hatch and in the rod tubes and it didnt leak, the storage hatch in front of the seat did leak very little( it needs a better seal also incase of being flipped) im still working on the best way to strap in down.

They are sealed on the hull end. The PA is just a monster of a boat.

I love the PA's so much that I have 2.

I am also glad Hobie is looking at ways to make them more water tight.

I found out late this summer that 1 of mine leaks badly around the front hatch and the rod tubes. My concern is more about being caught in a storm or heavy wave action than turtleing ........ taking water over the bow could and probably would end up under the decks so I will be working on sealing it this winter. Since the rod tubes are supposed to be water tight, I will be checking them closer to make sure it didn't just leak around the rod tube plate. Thanks for letting me know they are supposed to be water tight.

Until then, it is always good to have a bilge pump for emergencies...well you should always have one anyways. Hopefully an official mod from Hobie can remedy this soon.
